Does iMovie support AVI Files??

I'm trying to find out what file types are supported by iMovie. I currently have AVI files that I would like to import into iMovie, but I can't seem to locate any information on whether it is supported. What file types are? I can convert the files to another format if needed. but i don't want to lose any video quality. Suggestions??

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.9), i don't have the new imovie

Hi syangaw - AVI is merely a container, that can hold various file formats, especially MPEG. imovie HD is designed for DV-formatted material. Look at this link to see how to convert:

You will need:

MPEG StreamClip (free):

Apple MPEG2 PlayBack ($20):
