Why did itunes download as MP4 protected files when I setup MP3

Hi guys
I have setup my itunes to download files as MP3 when I buy them (and I have checked - this is still current). However when I bought half a dozen songs they have downloaded as protected MP4 files, and so won't convert to MP3 files. i have downloaded them for my daughter's MP3 player, and so they won't work! Is there anything I can do to convert them? And is there anyway of stopping this happening in the future?

dell, Windows XP

Does that mean all songs i buy from itunes in the future will be MP4?

Most of the songs sold in the iTunes Store are MP4, the only exceptions being the relatively small selection labeled as iTunes Plus, which are M4A. The Store does not sell MP3s.

If you plan to use your songs in a non-Apple "MP3 player" you might consider shopping at an online store that sells mp3s, such as audiolunchbox.com or amazon.com.
