Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Very easy to scratch discs on sharp aluminum edges around slot loader!

Have you noticed this yet? Those edges are too sharp. That area around the dvd slot should have received a rounded bevel, or been filed in some manner. This seems to be a serious issue, as many of my discs have new scratches on them. If you are not Perfectly straight with your disc when inserting it will get scratched.

Go and feel how sharp those edges are!

I am surprised no one else has chimed in on this. I played around with inserting and removing a disc over and over with an old useless disc. I need to say it again. If you are not careful to insert a disc at an exceedingly precise angle/straightness to the Aluminum cutout/opening for the slot loading superdrive, your disc will have a long line of scratches from the sharp, straight-edged, knife-like aluminum edges caused by the non-beveled cutout. I cannot believe this!

Is anyone else actually using the superdrive on their Aluminum iMac??

I did get my iMac very early in the release (early August), did apple fix this defect on the newer ones?

I sure wish someone else with a new iMac and an objective opinion would look at their Mac and post here.

126 views and only 1 reply from a non-iMac owner.....OK, I guess I am imagining this sharpness of edges around the slot-loading DVD drive.

I am also imagining that the Aluminum edges on the iMac STAND have perfect rounding of its edges. This rounding of the edges on stand is missing on the edges of THE COMPUTER ITSELF. But especially on the slot-loader.

I invite anyone with a Aluminum iMac who has used their superdrive to look at your discs....Any scratches!

Personally, now that I have become aware of this problem I am extra careful with the loading and unloading of discs from my machine.

Thought I was going crazy, with absolutely no one else noticing/commenting on this issue with the sharp edges around the superdrive that can potentially and/or easily scratch cd/dvd media.

But, alas, someone else has noticed:

P.S. I guess my formal question for this thread is this: What is the fix for a slot-loading dvd drive that has a rather sharp, metal cut-out, only millimeters from the loader, that very easily scratch any cd/dvd media put any where near it?

If the answer is to not use the drive, I think the machine needs to be recalled.

This is sort of like strike 3 for me. Strike one being Apple slipping me a 6-bit tn display with an extreme luminance gradient. Strike two being the frequent need to re-boot because of a system freeze/lock-up, and this knife sharpener on the right side of my new aluminum iMac.

Yes, I have seen the same thing. I have been recording my entire CD collection onto the new iMac (and from there to an iPod). It wasn't up until about the sixth CD turned up unreadable, with a visible scratch on the bottom, that it dawned on me that they weren't scratched before, it was the Mac itself that was doing it. What a lousy design point on a machine that has gotten so much attention for its design.

Finally, a few folks are noticing this!

Where are the rest of you? Do you not use the Superdrive?

I just saw a brand new print ad for the iMac on the back of my National Geographic. There it is in high resolution detail–the very sharp knife-like edges on the slot loader.

APPLE WHAT IS THE FIX FOR THIS?

I suggest people start calling/e-mailing Apple/Care about this concern.

I actually get out of my chair, move over to the right side to stand in front of the loader itself and try and slide in a disc a straight as possible....and I still feel it is very difficult to load/unload without getting any scratches.

I still have to ask this to reiterate how completely dumbfounded I am with the lack of iMac owners' comments on this design flaw:DO ANY OF YOU ALUMINUM IMAC OWNERS USE YOUR DVD DRIVE? HAVE YOU LOOKED AT YOUR DISCS LATELY?
