Finding out when a file was accessed/used...

Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone can help. I have a feeling someone may have been snooping through my files when I'm away. Is there a way I can find out the last few times (dates/time) certain files/applications have been accessed? Also, is there a way of locking my computer (so I have to enter my password to use it) without stopping any apllications etc. from running?

Many thanks.

No. If you search the forum, you'll find this has been asked quite a few times. You'll see that a popular solution is to create an encrypted disk image to store your important stuff.
RE: checking times/dates when files/apps were used, I was hoping there might be a Terminal command or something that could do this.

Naturally you can do this in Terminal, but what are you going to do with the information? If I ask the system what files in my Home directory have been accessed in the past hour, I get a list of 4812 files! Not really an useful list. If you are more specific, then perhaps there would be a more useful way of doing this.

Hi,

you can see the date/time when a document/application was last opened in Finder's column view. But this will only show you the last time. Locking can be done by several ways. You could setup your screensaver to require a password to quit it and set a corner of the screen to activate it. This can be done in System Preferences. Take a look at "Security" and "Desktop and Screensaver".

I prefer another way, though. Open Keychain Access.app and go to the apps pref menu. There you can set "Show status in menu bar". Once this is checked you will have a lock icon at the top right. From there you can lock your screen and more...

Many thanks for that. Another question, is it possible to password protect certain folders without putting them in a specific place? I was using the help menu in OSX and couldn't find anything on password protecting folders.

RE: checking times/dates when files/apps were used, I was hoping there might be a Terminal command or something that could do this. If anyone is aware of any way of doing this, please let me know.
