You can get it anytime during the first year.

Keep in mind, though, that Apple Care is not like the normal phone insurance. It will not cover lost or stolen phones, nor cover damages due to abuse.

Its just like Apple Care for other Apple products.

I bought Apple Care with my phone on July 28th. As far as I can tell (and I beleive that is what the genius bar told me) it is just an extension of the regular warranty. I'm looking for insurance for damage, etc.

To my knowledge this is unavailable via AT&T or Apple

I have heard of some people being able to add it to their homeowners/renters insurance as a computer, thus covering it beyond Applecare.

Thanks. I looked into that but the deductable is too high to cover it. I'll wait until Apple or AT&T offers the insurance. Until then I'll use my cracked one and let other potential buyers beware.

I strongly doubt they will. The phone has been out for almost 4 months now...

I'm thinking it might be available for subsequent models. I don't intend to replace mine until a newer model comes out anyway. The more people who suffer some kind of damage, the more that insurance will be saleable.

...and the more they loose in replacement costs...

BTW--the reason I reached for it is the annoying buzz it makes in my purse after retreiving my email--I thought I had a call. <<</div>

My iphone screen is cracked as well but it seems to work fine. does anyone know if there is some kind of screen cover I can put over it so that the cracks doesn't get worse. I don't mind the cracks but I feel like I should try and protect it more now.

I just thought I relay my experience with the Genius Bar and my cracked screen. I apologize if this has been mentioned, but I really think the deciding factor as to whether they'll replace it is what kind of crack it is. The genius took one look at mine and said, "Yeah, we can give you a replacement." Didn't even ask if I ever dropped it or anything; it was truly 'no questions asked'. He went on to say that for a thin, hair-line crack such as I had it's very possible it was a defect and was simply a stress fracture, but if the glass is shattered or has a puncture or shows a 'spider web' pattern radiating from a single point, then it was almost certainly caused by some kind of trauma. Of course, that determination is subjective so I recommend anyone with a cracked screen to bring it in regardless. You may be pleasantly surprised, as I was.

I initially applied a clear plastic tape over my cracked screen using a tape that was about two inches wide. It worked fine but I was concerned about the surface eventually becoming less transparent. When I finally went into the Apple store, I was fortunate enough to have a very assertive person adjacent to me with the same problem. We both received replacements.

I would recommend that anyone with an iPhone invest in a personal articles policy from their insurance company. I got one from State Farm in addition to my renters insurance. It cost me only $30 a year and covers any accidental damage or theft. Better than worrying about whether apple will replace it or not IMO.

I'd be curious to know what your deductible is. I do have Personal Property Replacement coverage on my homeowners policy but the deductible is $500. Obviously I wouldn't use it to replace a cracked screen that's going to cost ~$250 to repair. I suppose if I were willing to pay a higher premium I could have a lower deductible - perhaps even no deductible - but the higher cost would probably not outweigh the benefit.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

With mine I have zero deductible. Its essentially a separate policy from my renters insurance. I also have my macbook pro and my dSLR camera gear covered as well.
