How can I shrink/compress my movie size so that it doesn't exceed the max?

I have a movie that is 1.2 gigs of regular memory, but when I put it into iDVD, the project size is over 6 gigs. Is there any way I can compress the file to make it fit?

PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.2)

The file size of your raw content doesn't matter. iDVD only cares about the running time of your content in minutes because it converts everything to mpg-2 content. A max of 60 minutes in 'Best Performance' mode and a max of 120 minutes in 'Best Quality' mode.
