Display Bruising?

I have two gray areas on my display, roughly at three and nine o'clock each about two inches from center and each about one to two inches in length. There are also a couple quarter inch whitish areas at nine o'clock a little closer to the center. I brought MBP to Genius Bar. They told me that this was "display bruising" caused by external pressure to the case, most likely prolonged pressure. Of course, this was not covered under warranty. Interestingly, there are no signs of external damage to the machine. This is probably because I treat it carefully. It travels in the center compartment of a large well made (Tumi) computer bag in an additional padded insert. I feel that this represents a design flaw if the case is unable to protect the display from "bruising" when no external damage has occurred. I think Apple is dodging its warranty obligation. I would be interested in other experiences similar to mine. Thanks.

Hey guys, I've been trolling around on the forums and I've found a few other people with similar issues that I've responded to ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1219609&tstart=0, http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5768800#5768800). I've got some screen bruising too, also in spite of the meticulous care that I've shown. Maybe it is the heat, as I use my MBP for 10+ hrs a day (research student, humanities). The Genius Bar and Apple Care both told me it was my fault, too. So have any of you been able to get them to replace your screen free of charge? How much does it cost, if not free? Thanks, all.

I had 2 MBP since Nov last year. The first undergo 3 LCD change and the second machine is back with them for the 2nd LCD change.

My problem is similar to yours where you will see some shadowy patches on the screen at certain position.

I was trying to be honest to the Customer serivce office and said that i too question about my handling of the machine and the cleaning. And she probe further asking what i clean with. She did not seems too nice and wanted to void my warranty if they prove that my cleaning technique is the cause.

I was searching over the internet looking for the reasons for such a damage. There are several factors that I came across. Pressure and heat could also be the cause. Cleaning which they claim could be one of the reason as well.

But I find it difficult to accept after 2 machines and 5 LCD change they are accusing me of not being able to take care of my machine. Does it takes that long for them to realise? I too buy good protection pad for my MBP?

I am still pending their decision to repair for me. If they do not repair for me i will not buy their Apple Care cos you will have to battle it out with them again about the quality problem they have.

Any other advise?

I don't know if this is my problem. But I just ran into a pretty disturbing problem along that line. Last evening, worked on the MBP until late. Turned it off. Closed the lid. And unplugged it. The MBP spent the night on my desk, nobody touched it, nothing hapened to it, no spils, no hit, no nothing. It was just left alone. This morning, I opened the lid, I press the 'on' button and I have a heart attack : the screen has this huge blob, dark black, of dead pixels, and lines, horizontal and vertical starting at that blob, rendering about one third of my screen unusable. I swear my heart skipped a few beats.
I brought the mac to the Apple service center, and they took one look at it and said that they were going to send a picture of the screen to Apple, but they were pretty sure Apple would NOT green light the changing of the screen or changing the MBP.
What hapened to this MBP ?????? I am just as puzzled then the tech guy. And I KNOW I didn't hit it, bumped it. I didn't even put anything ON it. I just plain don't know what caused this. I take incredible good care of it (it is so expensive to buy, AND I use it everyday for my livelyhood). I bought a padded bag, etc.
There is no way I can caugh up the price of a screen or of a new mac.
Reading about 'bruising problems' might help me advocate for this problem. Anyone else has encoutered such a traumatic sight ?

Do you guys have a matte screen? I think it's the heat. I have had several non-Apple notebooks throughout the years from different vendors (Dell, Acer, Gateway, Alienware) and I have this habit of working with the laptop and while it's at the 'heat peak' I would do something else and close the lid. The extreme heat generated from the body itself affects the LCD. The thing is this issue only happens to the laptops that had a matte screen and not the glossy ones.
