Hotmail access using mail.app

I have not been able to access my hotmail account through mail since August 14, 2007. It had been working just fine since I got my computer in December 2006 through Daniel's httpmail plugin that I got from earlier discussions. Had no problems using my mail.app to read and send emails. Ever since Microsoft changed to Live, I have not been able to get my hotmail account to work using mail.app. Now everytime I use mail to try and check my hotmail account I get an error message saying that "Connection Failed - Could not connect to 'httpmail Account' Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email". I have been checking back on these discussion boards to find a new solution and have not seen anything that helps me. I looked at the Izymail website and don't understand how that works. Signed up for an account and now don't know how to use it or how it will solve my problem. I have used this hotmail account for years and that is the address everyone has for both personal mail and online accounts. I don't want to change my address to a new service. What am I doing wrong? I want to use the mail.app that is on my Mac with my hotmail account. How can I do this? Right now I have to check email by going to the hotmail.com site. Thank you in advance for your help and advice 🙂

Oops I just noticed your in Florida, not sure if the below will help, but worth a try!

I've just set this up a couple of days ago, & it's working fine! One of things I did on sympatico is to link my b1x Id to my sympatico email account, you can do this on the Bell.ca web site. Also the pop & smtp machines listed in your book are wrong, you should go online on the Bell.ca website their is alot of help their to integrate Mac Mail with your Hotmail account.

Hi srqdolphin,

I just downloaded and installed Daniel's httpmail plugin on my Macbook pro Intel base machine. I used Microsofts new incomming server address, which I got from their website, of pop3.live.com and downloaded all my email from the hotmail website. I just set up and tested my out going mail and it works too. The address I used was smtp.live.com.

You might also see if you're using the newest version of Danial's plugin and if not, I would upgrade to a newer version, but first try changing to the live.com address from above and see if that solves your problems.

I hope this information helps.

KKidd,
Thank you for the suggestion. I tried it and still get the message that my connection failed and I need to get a subscription. I have version 1.49 of Daniel's plug in. I changed my incoming mail server to pop3.live.com and my outgoing to smtp.live.com on socket 25. Still ahve not been able to have my mac get my hotmail account. Do I need to upgrade my hotmail subscription to a paid version? I have had this email address for years and would prefer not to lose it. Ans I preferred how the Mac Mail program worked better than goignt o hotmail website. Please let me know what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix it.

No you don't need to pay hotmail for anything. I'm using a free subscription and I have it working. After reading what I wrote the first time I forgot to mention that you need to select httpmail when you add the account. When I tried to use the POP selection it wouldn't work, so make sure you use httpmail.
Anyway, I created a word doc and a PDF of the steps I used to get the plugin set up. I would start out fresh by opening mail, going under the file menu and selecting add. Now follow the screen shots I created and hopefully everything will work out for you. Here's where you can get the document http://kevinsserver.myserver.org/httpmail/

Hope this help get you going,

Kevin

Kevin,

I have done everything exactly as you said and showed me and I still can't get it to work. Keep getting the little error symbol (triangle with exclamation point on it next to the Inbox) when I select "Get Mail" -- "Connection Failed Could not connect to "Hotmail Account" Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email". And the funny thing is I am not using Outlook or Outlook Express but Mail. This is getting very frustrating. It used to work until MSN changed to Live and now I can't check my email using Mail. I followed your instructions (which were very well done) and it did not work. Still get that error message. I can't believe it has been this difficult for me to resolve this. I may just have to resign myself to giving up Mail and using Hotmail directly or (heaven forbid) start using a new email address that can be used with Mail. I don't know. Thank you for your time and attention. If you get anymore brilliant ideas, please let me know.

OK so I ran the Mail Connection Doctor and the Hotmail Account - "Could not connect to this HTTPMail server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences."
The smtp.live.com account - "Connection to server succeeded, no login required."
So do you think I need to change the Httpmail URL on the Advanced tab of my account? And if so, to what? It is automatically filled in for me already with "http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp"

Thanks again for your advice and help.
