Macbook Bluetooth Hardware Not Found Issue -- RESOLVED.

This issue had been annoying me for full 12 months. I knew this issue long time ago but I was hoping a software patch could fix it so I didn't have to bring it for service.

The symptom was almost the same as everybody else: Randomly bluetooth hardware not found-- in both Mac Os and windows. No pattern of disappearing was observed. Just sudden appear or disappear.

Lately, I was too stupid to notice that the warranty was expired but this defect still had not been rectified. End up too sad and wanted to sell this piece of plastic. But was thinking, who's gonna buy a defective notebook no matter how new it is.

Then I ended up picking up a screwdrive and deassemble the unit myself as the warranty was expired anyway.

I followed a website which illstruated how to deassemble the unit STEP-BY-STEP until I could see the tiny bluetooth module. You would see the module is 'glued' on the bottom of the upper right of the plastic case with 2 3-4inches long wires which one of them connecting an antenna located on the DVD drive; and the other one linking to 4pins on the logic board (believed to be USB port).

The abovementioned 2nd cord connecting to the USB port traveled a LONG LONG way along with some power cable for CPU fan; data cord for DVD drive and harddrive; and somemore but I forgot which. Then I analyzed the symptom of sudden appear/disappear is due to two reaons: bad wire connection; or interference with other cable (as mentioned, it traveled a long way)

I carefully disconnected the cable and reconnected again and made sure it was tightly connected. Then I isolate the bluetooth port cable which were tied up together with other wires and reroute it in order to avoid interference w/ other cables.

Before I put all the screws back again, I turned on the computer and ran it for for 5 hours -- tried in windows and Mac OS with all applications and bluetooth file exchange/ data connection etc. Guess what -- Bluetooth worked flawlessly. Then I reassemble the whole unit again and the issue didn't happen.

My assumption was right that: most likely the senstive bluetooth device cable connecting the module and the logic board was interfered by other cables with huge current flow or electromagnetic; or simply the cable is not tightly plugged.

Just FYI, my "solution" ultimately failed after a day. Now nothing I do -- pRAM reset, reboot overnight with battery removed, delete .plist file and reboot, etc -- works. Sometimes after the overnight reboot I'll get my Bluetooth back for 30 minutes, but it disappears again. Once, I readjusted the angle of my MacBook display screen and recovered Bluetooth for a couple hours, but I have yet to rediscover the magic angle. Infuriating to say the least ...

I have been experiencing the same symptoms with my Macbook that I've been reading about in the multitudes of Apple and *Mac discussions and blogs:
- USB Port error in System Log
- Bluetooth Hardware Not Found
- No Bluetooth option in Preferences Pane
- Sleep Mode not functioning properly

I found one solution among the many that has worked consistently for me thus far:
*****Start the laptop WITHOUT the AC Power cord attached *****

I now have Bluetooth consistently and it stays available when I attached the power cord.

I've experienced the same problem with a macbook made in mid 2006.
I have disassembled it and rerouted the cables: moved the bluetooth interface cable (connecting the bluetooth module to the mainboard) to as high level as possible. I have also disconnected the bluetooth antenna cable from the bluetooth module, then reconnected it again. I have done the same with the bluetooth interface cable too.
When the macbook was open i had sprayed out the dust from all parts!
I have also lifted the back of the macbook from the table, to allow some air flow and reduce the heat. (This helped a lot BEFORE the disassembly!)
All these thing seems to solved the disappearing bluetooth problem for me. I'm using my macbook for about 6 hours now without any drop of the bluetooth connection. It was not possible before, my bluetooth connection dropped hourly and most of the time it didn't come back for an hour!
In my opinion the heat is the main problem, it can affect the bluetooth interface cable badly, so for the first step try to lift up the back of the macbook, You can use some pre-built macbook stands ( http://www.macworld.com/article/133117/2008/04/macbookdisplaystand.html) for this purpose or two little wooden or plastic cubes. 🙂

This is for anyone searching for solutions to this problem:

My iMac G5 running Mac OS 10.5.4 just did this. Started the computer this morning and Bluetooth was missing. It had vanished from System Preferences and was gone from System Profiler. I repaired my Permissions which failed.

I fixed the problem by resetting the SMU: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT176

This guide helped me to get rid of a big hedacke.....
I followed it and now wow it works..
Windows and Mac.
couple of hints more:
There is now soldering to be done just simply unplug and re route the wires.
I got them out of the bunch and stuck them one inch undet the dvd drive as far as i could.

About opening the pc i followed the instructions on the website mentioned on this tread.

Surprise::::::::....
My pc is first or second generation of course with all the issues like broken casing 2 times, battery, changed motherboard, whatever.
Opening it i discovered that:
screws where missing,
dvd drive connecting screw broken of the casing!!
so much to mac support.
My dealer witch is also a college, like any other dealers blamed it on me.. i can be rought but... not with my lovely pc(lovely i not mean my macbook but the pc as a tool).
Thanks agtain for this gr8 guide,

Fantastic!
I tried above ways of calm my macbook down, and the bluetooth worked for 3 hours, and then not found again, and can't sleep again. this issue has driven me mad for really long time, today I finally made an operation to it, and guess what, it works! till now, the bluetooth and the sleep function works so great, seems it rebirth! All I did is nothing but re route some wires(cables) in the right bottom there, holy, you can't imagine how exciting I am right now!

Thanks buddy, you really did a great job!

SORTED!

I have been having this particular issue for some time now. About half a year or more ago it came about - but I quickly ended the issue with a few trips (a month left under warranty) to an authorised Apple repairer - job done...

...not quite. It's been back with a vengeance (Bruce Willis style) and punishing me again. I use a Bluetooth mighty mouse and keyboard when at home so the functioning of this is pretty important and I have been treating these intermittant malfunctions as opportunities for breaks in work / procrastination...

...anyway. To cut a long story short -> I strapped a pair on about an hour ago and followed the ifixit.com optical drive removal instructions (on the iPhone 3G of course - pure geek haha) and...

I'm now typing on my Bluetooth keyboard!!

So. From disconnecting and reconnecting Bluetooth module plugsand by rearranging the wire to be less caught up with the others and be on its own - it would seem to have sorted the issue.

The pessimist in me thinks it will be 'unavailable' in the next 10 mins as per usual. If that's the case - expect me back to let you all know ;O)

Otherwise I'm chuffed that it has worked and back to work... sigh

Cheers previous posters!!

Latest news: the "BT unavailable" was happening very frequently and getting the "not going to sleep" issues, usually at the worst times. Got lots of the following errors in system.log:

Sep 21 07:57:50 localhost kernel[0]: USBF: 7.780 AppleUSBHubPort: Port 1 of Hub at 0x7d000000 reported error 0xe00002ed while doing set feature (resetting port)

Finally gave in and decided that putting the laptop to sleep was more important than bluetooth. Opened up my 2006 macbook and removed the bluetooth cable and the bluetooth module board (see ifixit.com link earlier in thread). So far, macbook is sleeping consistently.

There's probably several factors causing this problem (os, heat, cabling, bt module board). It's rubbish it exists. I hope the newer hardware doesn't work this way.

Hi,
I got a bluetooth randomly unavailable problem. I tried using those method. It works for a while (about a week) then the symptom goes back again. I have done this for 6 times but still end at the same problem.
Actually, where do you route your wire?
Where can I get the bluetooth module spare part in Singapore? cause I sick of having bluetooth unavailable.
Thanks
