My Computer won't recognize my i-pod... can anyone help?

I am using Windows XP... when I plug my i-pod in it gives me this message: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."

Hi,

I am having the same problem with a 4GB 3rd Gen Nano although all my other iPods work fine.

The issue has come since the new firmware update for the Nano. (1.0.2 I think?)

I Downloaded this via iTunes and it began to start installing, the message popped up on the screen that the software update had been installed and that the iPod was ejecting and would reboot (something along those lines).

That is all it has done since!

The Nano just keeps rebooting, gets just as far as the menu screen which you can only jsut about make out ans then screen goes blank and back to the dark apple screen.

I have been through the 5 R's although nothing is helping as the iPod is not recognised at all.

Going to try it on my Mac tonight and so will report back on any progress then.

I am having the exact same aggravating issue with my sons Nano. I followed the 5 R's and updated the iTunes software as it suggested however it did not resolve the problem. I did notice that the ipod stand alone firmware updater has mysteriously been removed from my system. In the device manager it does not show the ipod but rather it's listed as an "Unknown" device. When I click on properties it says there is no driver loaded for this device. Hmmm... wonder how my firmware updater and the driver just went poof and dissapeared?? By the way the Nano works and charges perfect except for the fact it cannot be recognized by either Windows XP or the latest n greatest version of iTunes. If I find a fix I will post it here... I'm going to try and reload the ipod updater that came with the ipod and see what happens.
