cannot restore ipod

I tried plugging in my ipod touch and itunes can't read it. it says to try restoring it, but when I try it gives me the message "The ipod "ipod" could not be restored. An unknown error occured. (-18)"
Also, in the system info on the ipod it now says that it only has 300 mbs capacity. Has anybody had a similar problem? any ideas on what to do? any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe a stupid question but did you try to do a hard reset from the (unplugged) iPod Touch itself?

Press simultaneously:

the top button and the bottom button for about 3-5 seconds and then wait to see if you get the Apple symbol. Way a minute or two and the iPod Touch will be reset. Now plug in the Touch to your computer with iTunes installed and see if it sycs up.

*Try This:*

1. Turn iPod Touch OFF completely.
2. Plug iPod Touch into PC/MAC while still of.
3. Turn iPod touch on, then IMMEDIATELY do the following steps \/
4. Hold the 'Home button' and 'sleep/wake' button together for atleast 5 seconds.
5. The Apple logo will appear
6. When this happens release the 'sleep/wake' button BUT KEEP HOLD OF 'HOME' BUTTON
7. Your iPod will reboot (Apple logo)
6. iTunes will recognise iPod in 'Recovery mode'
8. You will be able to 'restore' your iPod Touch now.

Hope this resolves your problem. It should if done properly.

I have same problem. I can't restore ipod Unknown error 1604. The first three times it seemed to fix itself when I would connect to computer and leave it over night. I asked local apple store genius ( oct 21) and he had never heard of problem 1604. He check ipod for updated software but it was fine. I tried the above suggestion about holding home key during reboot and was unsuccessful.

I have had the same problem twice - cannot restore iPod with unknown error 1604. Both times this problem occred, Safari locked up the iPod. The only way to get it to restart is to hold down the sleep and home buttons. The screen goes negative, and, is stuck in recovery mode. After letting the battery completely drain, the screen returns to normal and then the restore is successful. The problem - it only lasts about 1 or 2 days and the problem occurs again. I'm returning mine to the Apple Store. Hopefully Apple will become aware of this situation.

4. Hold the 'Home button' and 'sleep/wake' button together for atleast 5 seconds.
