I have lost my Apple Menu Bar icons. Time, battery meter, wifi, volume, .mac sync indicator, etc. However icons from Timbuktu, Mirra, Suffit are all there. I have the latest version of every product and the blue Spotlight Icon is there. But none others. How can I get these back?
This is a Macbook Pro with all updates to the OS and all software mentioned above.
You probably have a couple of corrupt preference files.
In "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences", delete com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
In "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost", delete com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
This will reset your Menu Bar to the default, so you'll need to go through System Preferences to reset the ones you need. (If they are already checked, uncheck them first and then recheck them).
System Preferences>Date & Time>Clock. Turn on Show in menu bar. If on toggle off and then back on.
System Preferences>Sound. Same deal.
Launch Internet Connect. Same deal.
System Preferences>Energy Saver. Same deal.
Go to HD/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras and double click the Clock.menu icon (or the Eject.menu icon) does the icon appear in the Menu Bar. If not post back.
Also hold down the Command key and see if you rearrange the icons.
Thank you, I have had an intermittent problem with some of the icons not appearing on boot, but the usually reappeared if I rebooted. This time they disappeared with the last security update and would not reappear. I deleted the files you suggested and rebooted. I didn't even have to reset any of them that way. Your suggestion fixed the problem for me. Thanks again.
I am having the same problem (no clock, no volume, no eject except for Sophos) and was very pleased to see Michael Conniff's solution here. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me... I even logged in as a different (admin) user and still nothing in the menu bar, except for Sophos.
I also tried the coreservices/Menu Extra trick (which used to work for the eject menu) but it doesn't want to play.
I have a G4 Dual 800, running 10.4.11. I think it only just started over a week ago and the only thing I did was to do a Software Update.
FWIW, now that I've installed 10.4.11 on my G4 867 the menu items keep disappearing even after I've trashed all the prefs and reset them to reappear in the menu. The only one that exists across all users is the clock, and it continually disappears for each user. Resetting it in the system prefs only lasts temporarily, as the box magically becomes unchecked soon after.
