Leopard brings the final blow to os 9?

First of all you must place the animated gif on a server that is readily available. I place mine on my .Mac account. Then it is simply a matter of HTML.

In order for you to see the HTML, I substituted a { } for the used to indicate tags in HTML.

I have a hypercard stack that I have been using for years. How can I up grade this to OS X? I've tried Supercard but was not happy with the result

I believe Apple abandoned Hypercard in 2001 or thereabouts, and as far as I know there is no easy simple/easy solution to your predicament. I know Appleworks has a database component that can do everything Hypercard could do and then some, but there is no - as far as I know - easy way to create a AW db from a stack.

By the way, I just opened AW 6.2.9 - which I have not looked at in more than 5 years - in OS 10.5. It opened, and seemed to work (but I really did not test anything). My guess is that there is no shortcut. You will have to come to grips with AW or some other programme, and (painfully) recreate the stack.

AppleWorks 6.2.9 runs fine for me under Leopard.

However, it's not just that Leopard does not run Classic; that's OK.

But there doesn't appear to be a way to start in OS 9 - instead of OS X - after having installed Leopard.

That is, OS 9 isn't available under System Prefs and Startup Disk - for me, anyway: I don't see an OS 9 option. Nor is OS 9 available by holding down the Alt/Option key at startup, then choosing OS 9 for startup. These options were available previous to Leopard.

I haven't yet found a way to choose OS 9 (..the real OS 9, not the Classic 'emulation'..) once Leopard's installed. This is a shame, as it makes the old (free) Avid Videoshop multi-track video editor, Adobe Elements and Kai's Photo Soap unavailable for use any more. And without explicit warnings before or during Leopard installation.

I can't speak to Appleworks 6.2.9 and Leopard, as I haven't worked with Leopard as yet. But, I am assuming if you can run Appleworks, there must be an "OS 9" or "Classic" system folder tucked away somewhere in the depths of your Mac? Appleworks asks me for a System 9 or Classic System to be on the disk when I want to install its software... but it only asks if it can't find OS 9 or Classic already on the drive. If it finds the system, then it will run just fine on OS X.

I too have AW 6.2.9. I never use it. Stretching the EULA a little - just to make this test - I copied it from my G4 to my Intel MacBook running 10.5. The MacBook of course has never known, and cannot ever know OS 9 or Classic.

This version of AW opens and appears to work fine. I only tested the word processor module, and all I did was start a new document. As I said I don't use the program, but there was not a hint of difficulty.

I do still have an OS 9 "System Folder" on my PowerBook, but I wasn't aware that AW needed it; I thought a "carbonised" version runs under OS X. As far as I remember - and it's ages since I installed AW - I thought that one could choose to install it under OS 9 or OS X. For the OS 9 version, it runs natively as an OS 9 application, and if you want it to run under OS X, then a "carbonised" (..optimised for OS X code..) version is installed.

Although my AW runs perfectly ..and there's an OS 9 System Folder, and "Classic" and "Classic Support" (which Leopard says it's not going to even think of running!).. I don't seem to find a proper full OS 9 any longer. So I can't choose to boot in OS 9 (..neither in Sys Prefs or by holding down Alt/Option at reboot..) ..it's just possible that I removed it some time, to free up hard disc space (..though I've swapped my 60GB disc for a 120GB disc..) but that seems unlikely.

It looks - at first glance - as though Leopard has "un-blessed" the OS 9 startup mechanism, or wiped it from the System Folder. I'm going to have to run some comparisons next week between this PowerBook and my other one, to see which OS 9 files have gone astray, and why..

Nevertheless, AW is working fine ..though I must train myself to go to "Pages" instead, now that I've installed it..

Is your OS 9 System Folder on the same partition as OS X? It will probably need to be on a separate partition. Just an educated guess, but don't take my word for it, I've never had a PPC Mac.

Thanks for offering; yes my System Folder is in the same partition, and I've only ever used just one single partition in all the Macs I've ever had, and it's worked perfectly in that manner since I first got a G3 PowerBook about eight(?) years ago (..I've gone through three, and a Mac Mini and a G5 quad; see my specs below..) and that's where it ought to be.

"..don't take my word for it, I've never had a PPC Mac.." ..then, as I say, thanks for offering, but maybe advice from someone who does use a PPC may be a little more useful, no?

Well, yes I know I obviously can't check what I'm saying, but it makes since to me that since Leopard no longer supports Classic, that it may not be possible to boot to OS 9 if it's on the same partition as Leopard.

Either way, you no longer need OS 9 on the same partition, and with Leopard, you can repartition a hard drive in Disk Utility without destroying the data.

Well, I don't know the whys or wherefores, and can't say anything about OS 10.5 behavioiur as I haven't tried it, but on my ibook running onlyOS 10.2.4, I am requried to install OS 9 (or Classic), to allow for Appleworks 6.2 to be installed. (Appleworks runs just fine on my iMac running 10.4.10, but then again I also have a System 9 sitting along with the OS 10.4.10.) I am pleased to hear I will be able to keep using AW when I upgrade to 10.5!
