Ipod Touch Wi-Fi Connections

Okay. I'm new at this Ipod Touch, but im pretty sure i have the Wi-Fi down. (at least I think) Correct me if i'm wrong, i don't have to "setup" anything for Wi-Fi since it is built in right? and in addition, when i go to the settings and then to the Wi-Fi section, under "Choose a Network..." there is barely any...no more then two if there is. When I try to "join" them or "connect" to them, it always says its unable to join or connect to it. Also, everytime i try to surf the web on safari, it says it can not connect to the sever. I haven't gotten it to work once. Does anybody have an answer to what i am doing wrong?

OK First things first.

1. What is the make of Wireless router you are trying to connect to at home?
2. Do you have encryption running on it? What kind WPA? WEP?
3. When you are in Wireless preferences do you see the name of the network displayed?
4. If you tap on it and you have encryption on the wireless router, does the iPod ask you for a password.

I am also having trouble. I use a Linksys router that I have set to WEP encryption. On the WiFi settings page, I have a check mark next to the name of my network, but when I try to wirelessly access safari or the iTunes store, I get the error message that the server can be found.

Shoukd the IP address on iTouch be the same as my router and what about the DNS and subnet mask. I have tried different combos, but noe seem to work. I am reluctant to change the channel from 6 to 11 as some have suggested as I don't want to mess with my other wireless connected devices.

The password was asked for when I first started to set up, but it was the generic password for my system, nothing special about the password.

If you have trouble connecting to a Wireless Access Point that uses WEP, edit your WiFi settings to “forget” your presently stored connection, then shut down the iPhone by holding down the power key until you see the shut-down option, and then restart it.

Once restarted and you are prompted for the WEP Password; enter a dollar sign in in front of the wireless access point’s password: where 0123456789 becomes $0123456789

I found this after a search, and it actually worked perfectly for me!

First things first again.

I would try disabling all encryption, just until you get the connection working, then try to re-secure.

In almost all cases the router should set stuff like the iPod's IP address automatically. I presume your other PCs are set up to use DHCP. In that case, looking at the details of the wireless network you should select DHCP rather than Static or BootP and let the router do the rest,.

The IP address of the iPod should certainly NOT be the same as the router. No two devices you own should have the same address - because they will clash.

Not to hijack the thread, but I'd thought I'd post here instead of creating yet another thread on Wifi. Anyway, here's my question:

I'm trying to use the Wifi at our local church (yes church, they have a cafe with Wifi). Anyway, when I'm at church my iPod shows the network and there is no padlock or anything. It connects to the network just fine and I see the Wifi icon at the top. I check the settings for the network connection and it shows I have an IP address and it shows DNS servers.

However, when I open Safari and try to browse a website (doesn't matter what I address I put in there), it automatically does a "redirect". In other words, the address I put in changes to something with an IP address with a \login.html. So I'm assuming it's supposed to be redirecting me to some kind of logon webpage? Unfortunately, the rest of the screen is blank white and there is nothing to enter in anywhere. It just stays at that screen and does nothing.

Could it be that they are using VPN or something not compatible with the iPT? OR am I supposed to contact the church admin for a logon of some sort first before trying to connect? It was busy at church and there wasn't anyone to ask the day I was trying it, that's why I'm asking here.

Thanks.

I had issues with my belkin router connecting but I had to turn DHCP off. To fix I used a feature on the router called Access Point (AP) only...
1.) I don't think DHCP works, IP numbers like 192.168.x.x don't work. They route to internal networks and I think the iTouch is "locked" down for that. I'm trying to confirm this.
2.) With the belkin routers AP only option, any PCs hardwired to the router don't work. I bypass my home LAN, iTouch is happy and goes WWW surfing.
3.) If you're trying to connect and your iTouch has a 169.x.x.x number, you haven't completely connected.
4.) Wireless security: WEP128 recommended read the apple support says OK, I havent tested, I used WAP-PSK w/ TKIP...
5.) I troubleshooted with all encrypt off, as suggested ... Dont think wifi encrypt was the issue.
6.) I couldnt get static IP to work either. Might work, I suggest don't use private IP numbers (ie. 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x)... Thinking here is you want the iTouch to think its going to the WWW and not your internal LAN. If we could file share inside the LAN why, we wouldn't need iTunes! Heavens!!!
- Hope this helps someone... /cie

Can you help?

I can see my Netgear wireless router on the list of available networks, but when I enter my password it says "incorrect password for SKY...." I know this is the correct passwords as it states it on the side of the router and I have sucessfully connected our home PC's and XBOX 360.

On other occasions when I have tried to connect, it come up with a message about not being about to join the network etc

Any ideas?

I had the same problem. I reset my router, logged in, then set a new username and password. I tried again, nothing. I was connecting to the router but couldn't get safari to connect to a webpage. Afer alot of trial and error it finally clicked.

It does not want your login password, you need to enter your WEP encryption key. I use 128 bit encryption so its a horrific 16-digit number/letter combo (found in my router info when I logged in to the router).

Enter in the WEP key and Poof! Success...

Tried all of your suggestions. I have a Belkin router with 128-bit WEP encryption. I put in the encryption key (hex) about 1000 times (alright, a slight exaggeration, but not much), then finally tried connecting to a bogus network, which, of course, it said it couldn't connect. Then tried again connecting to mine and it worked! I think sometimes it's just trial and error.
