Audio Midi setup crashes constantly

Firstly where is the forum for Audio Midi setup ? Macs are always touted as being creative machines so where is the support for midi on the site ?

Crash, Crash, Crash. Everytime more than one device all claiming to be "class compliant" is connected and tested Audio midi setup crashes when an application is launched. Midi is supposed to interconnect instruments it,s been around years why can't Apple make it work?
I called M-audio to see if it was a hardware issue - they claim Apple's recent Quicktime 7.2 renders "class compliant" midi devices useless and until Apple quote:"pull their finger out" no solution.
Meanwhile back at the ranch I can only use one midi device at a time. Useless.
And why can I only use one USB port of the two ?

Macbook pro -not yet - maybe still Macbook consumer

Fed up.

I have a similar issue with my new Mac Pro, I've installed updated drivers/sofware for all my contollers and other audio hardware (Pro Tools 7) and when I'm in the Audio Midi Setup window it will randomally crash, as an audio professional I'm a little nervous to say the least and due to the amount of gear running on the system the task of identifying the hardware and/or software that is responsible is a daunting one that I'm not willing to put myself through quite yet. Meanwhile money is ticking away as my studio is rendered useless for the time being.

And I agree with Andrew, where is the audio/midi forum? There is none, you're kidding right?

I just bought this mac in September, after friends touted it as the ultimate musician machine and told me how I wouldn't waste hours wrangling with the OS and bugs like with a pc. My audio midi setup crashes CONSTANTLY, and now after a reinstall, the drop-down lists for new devices are all empty. I've NEVER had this type of problem with a computer before in my life. It's really unacceptable and my mac friends are starting to get embarassed for recommending it to me. I've spent a MONTH just trying to get things to work and it's not going well. The people at Applecare had never ever seen the audio midi setup window before in their life when I called. I had to educate the person on the other end of the phone. I'm a newish mac user, I shouldn't know more than you, ever. And to hear that there's no forum for this just makes me want to chuck this thing into the river. I paid nearly $1200 for a really cute looking, shiny silver piece of imac crap right now, when all I want to do is make music, not war. Does anybody at apple think that maybe this is important enough to dedicate a forum to, or at least teach the genius bar and applecare guys about? Apple's rep is built on AV, and this isn't looking good. Has anybody found any fixes elsewhere that they'd like to share? I've run disk utility, deleted plists, restored old preferences after reinstalling and it didn't fix it either way...

Well guys since my post I picked a G4 on Ebay and I'm busy rebuilding the studio using OMS !
At least I can work on art not fiddling with midi setups.

Apple seem far more concerned with selling content these days than building anything to make the content with.
Your comment's about the "genius bar" are spot on, they can only field questions from domestic consumers - waste of time for creative professionals - fine if you can't work your iPod....

My last four pieces available on the much hyped iTunes were made using OS9 !

Great advert for Apple huh!

Only workaround I can suggest is go backwards or get a PC and just use OSX for web browsing.

Meanwhile keep moaning, eventually Apple might as the M-Audio guy said "get their fingers out".

Cheers

Andy

Well, I just plunked down about $1500 in apple investments for music, so I can't use this as a pretty, shiny doorstop. However, I think one solution I might try is to wipe this computer out and start over, but skip the Apple updates. I think my troubles might have begun with an update or two, so if I get osx working, I won't allow the system to update and will just leave it alone.

I think it really is quicktime screwing me up because I'm having all sort of problems that all point that direction. Is there a way to uninstall updates after they have been applied, or a way to manually install upgrades without the software update utility by downloading them from an actual web page someplace?

ok, if anyone needs a fix:

try the following:

1. Finder>Applications>Utilities>Dick Utilities>Repair Disk Permissions
2. Finder> (your name) HD [hard-drive]> Library > Caches, move the whole folder to desktop, dont trash, you may need some of these settings for something random, it'll prompt for your password.

3. Finder>..>Library>Preferences, find a file named com.apple.Audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist, trash that too

it's probably something to do with these, it seems to have worked for me 99% of the time. which is okay, b/c my ProTools still can recieve MIDI signal from the controller. Apl Care says i might need to archive my settings and reinstall the operating system. i have too much on this thing to lose over a simple crash that hasnt effected me greatly at this point.
