The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occured(9).

I got my iPTouch 16 GB on Oct.13 and on hooking to XP SP2 PC got it on the iTunes ver 7.4.3.1, was able to download music after charging. iTunes showed that a new software ver 1.1.1 for iPTouch was available(of150MB).Got it downloaded to iTunes but when it started to download to iPTouch, it failed and asked to do resotre. All this happened in just few hours of getting it.

Since then, even after reinstalling the iTunes, my iPTouch is not going beyond showing the icon of a plug and a CD.Every time iTune is able to detect the iPTouch saying that it has detected an iPod in recovery mode, you must restore it. And on doing so that error of 'The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occured(9).' comes up and it again asks to restore.

Though every time iTunes is able to detect an iPTouch, my XP does not show it in 'my computer' as any hooked device or drive.

May I request Apple and other members on this forum to help me out. It is clearly a software problem.

Many thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with my iTouch in the first week that I had it. It wouldn't sync with my computer, it lost everything I had put on it. Then when I tried to restore it using itunes, it gave me the same error. I found that it will still restore itself if you do it using the iTouch itself. There is an option in settings that will allow you to restore it to factory settings. Good luck! This worked for me and I haven't had any problems since, hope it works for you aswell!

I tried the restore from the iPod touch screen as well, but continue to get "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (-18). I was on with Tech Support for over an hour today after I went to get my iPod, and all the music was gone.. Its still on my computer, and in iTunes, but even Tech Support was stumped. I sent them some log's, but they don't have an answer... Any other ideas out there ?

Thats the same error that I've got. Couldnt even start my new iPod Touch (virgin). Eventually, I could restore it from another computer, but when I plugged to my comp, after a while a had the "blue screen of death", and the Touch was out again.

No use to resture from the Touch settings since I cant access there. I got just the "plug to iTunes" icon on the screen. Tried another USB port, reinstaling iTunes, unplugging some devices... Im lost. For what I know, there's no apple support page concerning this "unknown error (9)", and its pretty frustrating...

I did finally get my to "restore" using the suggestion in this string of using the IPOD General Settings menu to first "erase all content and settings", let it reboot, and then doing a "reset all settings".. On the next reboot, I put it on its cradle, Itunes found it, and resync'd all my songs, etc.. Pretty silly, and frustrating, as Apple support was no help at all. I upgraded to the Touch as I had an original IPOD that honestly was on its last legs.. I didn't need a iPhone, so the Touch was a great way for video as well.. I hope this is a one time issue.

I have just had exactly the same problem .... bought a new IPtouch today, synced it tonight, then downloaded the new version of iPod software 1.1.1.1 and .... error! A restore was suggested which I accepted, then the iPod error - could not be restored, unknown error (1604). Now I am nowhere. I reinstalled iTunes, no change. All I get is the connect to iTunes screen on the IPTouch.

Help!

Thanks to all members for sharing in. In my case finally, I got a brand new replacement from Apple through their Authorised Service Provider,A-1 Infotech, Mumbai. Since in India, Apple does not have a widespread presence, the service and support I got was amazing.

In my case though I never came to know whether the problem was of software or hardware, but the simultaneous step I had taken was to call the toll free number of Apple in India and got my problem registered. Since the iPod Touch was under warranty, I got it replaced without much hassels. I advise the same path for other users and if possible get the additional Apple Care Protection Plan for additional one more year.

Though I have yet to find out how to avail that Protection Plan in India.

Best wishes,

Having spent many hours trying to fix the problem I decided to exclude the Operating System (in my case Vista) as the source. I connected my new iPod to an XP computer which already had iTunes on it and .... it worked! Restored the iPod system and all worked again.

So, perhaps this is an Operating System problem!
