Bonjour/mDNSResponder.exe Issues

* Moved from "iTunes for Windows > Installation & Upgrades" forum *

Hi,

After a couple of somewhat irritating days of constant loss of DNS relying through my server I've traced the issue back to mDNSResponder.exe and the bonjour application, as soon as mDNSResponder.exe is executed my Router (D-link DSL-G604T) can't seem to relay the DNS info, has anyone else had this issue and know how to sort it? I've disabled it in services and atm its ok but only time will tell...

Any ideas would be apprechiated.

Tim

ITunes v5 caused the same problem with my DSLG604T. However, it also blocked the ability to set the DNS server manually in the router. Also BT advised against this as the DNS server addresses change from time to time. They were aware of the problem with iTunes v5 and advised contacting Apple. Apple advised uninstalling v5 and waiting for a fix. Great! That fixed the DNS problem and I reinstalled iTunes 4.7 but then had to reinstall the standalone version of Quicktime 7.0. Now I'm stuck with iTunes version 4.7, I've lost all of my playlists and no podcasting anymore. Thanks Apple. So does disabling bonjour fix the problem?

Have a look here: http://www.d-link.co.uk/?go=jN7uAYLx/oIJaWVWDrsbU9f8nJUIKOZQTcuga/O31g24UoR9hr8o LJokNaZn6jUoFy4=

I called D-link about this last Friday and was given a slightly different work around to that published in the above document. You can also change your TCP/IP properties as follows (I assume your setting is "Obtain DNS server addresses automically". Change to "Use the following DNS server addresses" and set

Preferred DNS server: 4.2.2.2
Alternate DNS server: 4.2.2.3

This cost me a half day trouble-shooting and I'm so annoyed about it that, in principle, I've now stopped the mDNSrespnder service altogether. For anyone who want to do this, go to Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->Services. Locate "Bonjour services" and set the start type to "disable".

Fine if you have only one computer. Not an option if you have a whole bunch that need to have DNS server addresses set thru DHCP because they also attach to several other networks.

There is another post on this site that suggests the problem has been fixed in iTunes 5.0.1.
Non-technically, Apple have changed the way Bonjour works with DNS.
Technically... oh you don't want to know.

Haven't had a chance to test this yet and not sure that I want to given that the post also claims that in 5.0.1 Bonjour is embedded in iTunes and cannot be disabled (is that any way to treat your customers Apple? I own both Mac and Win PCs, by the way).

I had this problem with a SAFECOM SWAMR-54108 Wireless ADSL Modem Router and disabling the Bonjour Service solved the DNS problem. So not just DLINK routers at risk.

Apple - You owe me a whole afternoon of my time!

I dont like bonjour for windows, as that file cooked my laptop....

I brought my laptop camping with me, and throught the whole camping trip, my CPU was maxed out at 100% because of THAT file.. and uninstalling bonjour wouldn't work.. My laptop might be dead, as the CPU overheated from that file, and right now, even back from camping, it will NOT turn on...

I even removed the PCMCIA networking cards (wireless and wired) and it STILL maxed out the CPU...

so I am very disturbed that this happened, and my nice laptop may be dead from a file...
