Keyboard and mouse wires too short...

Hello, I just recently purchased my first imac. I love it so far!
However, the cords on the keyboard and mouse are way too short. It's an issue for me, and I was just wondering what type of wire I'd need to purchase to extend them.
Please give me specific names and or websites where I can purchase, ect. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff.
Thank you so much in advance!

When I needed that, I went to CompUSA with my Keyboard and got an extension cable, not knowing where else to go (not knowing anything then!). It's a USB extension cord.

It is really not a good idea to plug your mouse into the keyboard.

Don Archibald, a Level 5 here, said the USB ports on the keyboard (for you desktop users) are underpowered, and can cause freezing , if the mouse is plugged in there. This can even fry the keyboard sometimes (happened to him).

Dale, I find that really surprising.

I've used the mouse plugged into the keyboard since I had a Grape iMac with no problems, even now using a Microsoft mouse which has oodles of cable it's connected to the keyboard (along with a Bluetooth dongle in the other port) out of habit. The short length of the cable surely implies that this is how the set-up is designed. I guess different tolerances in the components etc etc.

aquaipodmini,

Apple do make a USB extension cable which is white to match the keyboard/mouse. It's shipped with the tower Macs where the keyboard cable really isn't long enough. They are nearly always available on ebay (link), if the colour is important, or as Dale says, any USB extension cable will suffice.

mrtotes,
My comments on where to plug your mouse in are from Don Archibalds posts to others with mouse freezing problems.
I know, I never had problems with it either. I did move my plug in choice to the monitor after reading his replies. I have open ports and an extension so it's no big deal for me to move.
I do respect Don's opinion though, hence the move!

Cheers! DALE
