I have a 75gb hard drive on my mac book, which is about a year old, but an increasing amount seems to be disappearing. I've used What Size, Omnidisksweeper and jdiskreport to scan the hard drive they only scan about 25gb of space, which is where all my applications, library and files like photos and documents are. If I check the hard drive info it says I have 74.21gb capacity. What is using up this extra 50gb? I've also used Cocktail to run all the maintenance scripts and delete logs and caches, but it hasn't made much difference. I use Chronosync to synchronise certain folders with my desktop - could this be causing a problem?
I'm at a loss!
Thanks.
do you set up File Vault?
do you have 2 or more similar iTunes library?
Click on your HD icon on desktop > File > Get Info, it will show you capacity & available & used.
hopefully the available will show 50 GB.
What is a File Vault?
I don't have any music in my iTunes library so I don't think that is the problem.
When I get info on my HD icon on the desktop it tells me that I have 75gb, but the problem is 50gb of them are not available for me to use and I don't know what is using them.
Thanks Mort. Francine's Amazing Disappearing Disk Space was v useful. I've found 45 GB of files in an invisible folder called /.Trashes/501 but I've failed to delete them in the Terminal using the rm command.. I can delete only the files (many of them are images) which have their original name from the camera, but not files which have text names. Any ideas?
I used the go to command in Finder and searched for /.Trashes/501 and there was the folder. I just dragged it all into my trash and deleted and now I have my 45gb back!! Hurrah!
