Is it possible to add an external memory chip to the iphone to give you more than 8gb of memory?

Not at this time.
Does "Not at this time" refer to this model, or will a newer model (if one comes out) be required?
It refers to this model at this point in time.
It is impossible to speculate what features an unannounced model might have or what a future update might allow.

So my question is this ... does the amount of memory you have on the i-phone (lets say its at 8GB capacity) affect things like the user efficiency of the phone or the speed of the internet?
I wonder if someone will come up with an adaptor that will allow you to use a USB pen drive with the iPhone?? Be a neat way of adding memory.... I guess the iPhone software would need updating so that it recognises an external drive....

No the 4GB or 8GB is storage capacity. (Which is more like 3.5 GB and 7.5 GB respectively).
The 4GB and the 8GB run at the same speed for applications and both run rather quickly.

The capacity does not affect the speed of the internet or efficiency.
The 8GB's just gives you room for storage for songs and pictures, if you are using Edge most of the time you can always turn on Wifi or if you have a wireless router you can connect your iphone to your wireless router connection for a faster speed.
