NEC ND-3540A won't write to DVD

Hi, i recently installed a NEC ND-3540A into my G4 and have just attempted to burn my first DVD in order to free up some space on my computer.

I was using finder to burn the DVD and dragging and dropping the files onto the disc. It had no problem copying the files onto the disc, and when i went to burn the disc it asked me what speed i wanted to do it at. (I chose maximum but have since chose probably every other speed). When I click burn i get the status bar with the diagonal lines which i think mean it is preparing to burn. But that's all I get. I realised that burning a DVD would take longer than a CD so I left if for about 2 hours, still nothing.

When i try and stop the burn it tells me that some data may have been written to the disc rendering it useless if i stop now, if i click stop again i get the spinning wheel and although all of my other applications work, finder freezes. If i then reboot and get the disc out again it os blank. I have tried burning CD's using the same method and have had no problems.

If i look in Disc utiliy it says the drive is read-only, if i look in system profiler it says it is CD-RW/DVD-RW disc burning vendor supported. Could it be the media i'm using? (Sony 1x-8x compatible DVD+R)

Can anybody give me any pointers as to where I'm going wrong?

Thanks in advance.

I have this particular NEC model in my LaCie external FireWire drive. However, I have never burnt any DVD using the Finder, I keep using Toast 7, which always worked perfectly, although it's expensive (99 bucks).

So far I have only used JVC DVD-R media, and some of a friend's Dual-Layer Verbatims. Both have worked. I have mostly burnt movies (some home-made and some zone 0 backups of DVDs I own, so that they play in any DVD player - and they do). I have attempted a general backup of my computer (about 10 GB) that I asked Toast to span across 3 Single-layer JVCs ... and it failed, but data spanning is very young on the Mac.

I see that you are using 10.3.9 ... could it be a driver issue ? Did NEC provide any driver that you installed, or did you use Patchburn or anything else ?

I haven't tried using any other media, i bought a few of these sony discs to test it out. They were from Taiwan so maybe i should try another brand.

I don't really want to shell out for Toast if I can burn discs using finder or otherwise. When I installed the drive I used patchburn to get it to communicate with the computer, which it does. I Have not installed any drivers or other programs as the driver came without instructions or drivers.

The drive writes and reads CD'd no problem, and reads DVD's, so i thought it was a bit weird that it didn't write to dvd?

Thanks for the advice.
