I've got a Laser Writer Pro 630 that was connected to the built in ethernet port of my Power Mac when I had a dial up Internet connection. Two weeks ago I got DSL and I use the built in ethernet port for that now. I purchased an Asante 10/100 friendly net 590 pci card for my printer and installed it today along with the latest drivers for Panther. There are newer drivers for Tiger but I haven't tried them. I activated apple talk on the new card but haven't been able to get the printer to respond. I tried the DSL on the new card and it worked fine but I haven't figured out how to have them both work simultaneously. I'm told that this should not be a problem. But so far it is. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Thanks

Are you using a crossover cable to connect from the printer to the mac? The internal ethernet port should be auto-sensing, so you should be able to hook it directly to the printer without a crossover cable and then plug the DSL modem into your new card.
Hi Alex,
This is what I tried yesterday. And the printer works now.
1. Disconnected both ethernet cables
2. Plugged printer into built in port (as before dsl)
3.In preferences: Made built in ethernet only active port and activated appletalk.
4.Did a restart and tried to print. Printer worked.
5. Plugged DSL into added ethernet card. Configuration was automatic. Launch Safari. DSL worked fine.
6. Tried to print again, and the printer worked too.
Don't know if I needed the restart.
I don't believe the cable I have on the printer is a crossover cable.
Thanks for your help.

I just installed DSL yesterday connecting to my router, and my Laser writer won't respond now, wheras it did when I had a cable modem hooked up to the router, which is a D link. Can anyone help here?
Hi,
if your using MAC (this is the ID of the interface itself, every Ethernet card has)based Access/Firewall, you have to put the MAC address of the printer to the list of "Devices can access the network" in the firewall section of your D-Link's web config page.
If your using DHCP then you have to change the printer IP address to DHCP or give the printer an IP which is at the same range as your other IP address' like:
192.168.1.1 D-Link
192.168.1.2 Your Mac
192.168.1.3 Printer

Nicolas

Donald:
What make/model of "router" do you own?
What model name/number of Lasewriter printer?
If (a) this "router" is really just a simple ethernet hub or switch and (b) your new DSL internet service uses the PPPoE protocol to establish a user connection, then you need to follow the advice here:
Mac OS X: Using AppleTalk With PPPoE

I have a D-link 604 router, and Laserwriter Pro 630, connected to a G$ laptop. Thank you for any help you might have on this.
Hi Nicolas,
unfortunately, I did not quite understand your response. I do not know where i would enter the IP address for the printer. I am using DHCP, so would i do that in the apple system preferences, or would I have to do that by connecting to DLink? I do not know if I am using MAC firewall. Is that installed with OS 10.3?
Thanks for youur help.

MY DSL is using TCP/IP, and DHCP.
Hi Donald,
You have to set the IP on the printer.
You can use Apple's Laserwriter Utility in OS9.
My printers have a display where I can set it.
A friend of mine is still using an Apple LWPRO810 which has a display too.
I don't know if your printer is capable of DHCP.
Therefor, I thought it is better seting the IP manualy.
The MAC firewall is build in your D-Link router and it is off by default.
But, if you using it, you have to add a new point for your printer.
Hope this is helpful

No, the problem is not solved. Thanks for asking.
I forgot to mention that the DSL is using TCP, Not PPP.
Most DSL ISPs are using PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol Over Ethernet);)
TCP/IP only is used if you have an router.
