Help with Rulers and Guides

A couple questions from a newbie!

When I open a new (blank) document and select "show rulers", it only displays the horizontal ruler only - what am I doing wrong here?

Guides - when I click in the ruler and try to drag, it looks like it started to had a tab mark and when I let go in the work-space it deletes (poof)! What do I need to do to drag a guide on the page?

Thanks,
Mark

If you are using Pages 3, you can turn on the vertical/side ruler in Preferences. Check the third box under Ruler Units - Enable vertical ruler in word processing documents.

For the guides, in a word processing document, click on a floating object or click outside the layout area. Command + click for Pages 3. Now you can click in rulers to make guides appear. You click in the vertical ruler & drag to the right or click in the top ruler & drag down to insert guides.
