Gray square box

My g5 froze the other day and the only way to power it down was to pull the plug. holding in the power button didn't work. anyway, now when i boot up, i get the apple logo for about 1/2 second then a gray square box. the computer boots to the desktop fine and i am able to use all apps. does anyone know what this gray box is? i have posted an example here: www.suerothberg.com/IMG_3419.JPG
does anyone know what this is?

I had something similar to that on my G4. I rebooted in safe mode and ran disk utility first aid but I cannot remember what solved it as I ran Tech Tool and Disk Warrior. At first I freaked out but just started using these tools. I think something got buggered up. I think my G4 locked up and I had to do a hard reboot. Yes it comes up but then you can run everything thats why I thought it was a minor and ran those utilities.

See if that helps and let us know.
