Bought new AGP Card-Replacing original/Goes in same Spot?

Hi, I bought a NVIDIA GEFORCE FX5200 DVI VIDEO CARD off of Ebay to replace my original Graphics card in my G4 Sawtooth. Do I take out the original and put the new one in (that spot) or leave in the original and put the new one in a PCI spot? Any info would be great.

Thanks, Retha 🙂

Hi Retha,

AGP and PCI slots are totally different. If the new card you have is an AGP card, it will only go in the AGP slot (you would remove the original card).

However, before you install this card, I would feel better if I knew more about the card you have just bought.

Was this card advertised as being specifically for Mac? (PC cards won't work on a Mac).

Was this a genuine Mac Edition card? (Some cards on eBay are PC cards that have been "flashed" to work on a Mac - some function well, some don't).

Was this advertised as being a G4 or a G5 card (most G5 cards do not work on G4's).

If it is a genuine Mac Edition card, does it have a native ADC port? (The Sawtooth is pre-ADC, so it won't be able to power this ADC port if it's there). What ports does it have?

Sorry about peppering you with all these questions, it's just that I want to make sure that any subsequent advice you get from me (or anyone else) will be in context.

If there is anything else you would like to know about, I'm happy to help.

Cheers!

Karl

Hi Karl,
Thanks for info-here is the ad of the card I bought. I hope it answers the questions you had. I hope it will work-wasn't cheap. 🙂

MAC NVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5200
275MHz 128MB AGP Video Card
OSX TIGER CORE IMAGE G4 CUBE!
THE ONLY 5200 w/ DIGITAL DVI LCD SUPPORT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE!

As seen installed & discussed extensively on www.CubeOwner.com, this is the very 1st Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 series MAC 128MB AGP Video card to offer CORE IMAGE & native DVI LCD support to Powermac G4 Cube owners as well as Powermac G4 AGP tower owners! This card is brand new, but was tested in my own G4 Cube as well as several of my Powermac G4s to ensure MacOS 10.4.2 Tiger compatibility! This single display card is clocked at 275MHz but more importantly, unlike the Radeon 9200, 9000, or 8500 models, this card is MacOS 10.4 Tiger CORE IMAGE SUPPORTED! Also, this Mac card is much faster than that old Rage 128 or even a Radeon 7000, Radeon 7500 or any Geforce2 MX video card. It also includes a brand new quiet fan that requires no additional power connections, great for G4 Cube owners. This also helps control heat if you have other PCI cards in your Powermac G4 tower, but it is especially important for owners of a G4 Cube (like me) as nearly every video card upgrade for a Cube requires a fan these days it seems. This Nvidia Geforce FX5200 is 1 of only 3 currently available FX5200 models that will run native DVI digital LCDs (up to 19") (Apple's FX5200 won't fit in a G4). Others are advertising DVI support, but with many issues you won't want to deal with, like flickering problems and compatibility hassles or the use of adapters. This one just WORKS right out of the box with a variety of LCD displays! And of course all VGA CRT & LCD type displays are supported as well. Plus, this nVidia FX 5200 video card is also Apple Quartz Extreme enabled and one of the few inexpensive Mac video cards that is MacOS 10.4 Tiger CORE IMAGE SUPPORTED WITH WORKING DIGITAL DVI! It's even supported by Apple's high-performance motion graphic design and production application Apple Motion This card works in ANY 4X AGP Powermac G4 (Digital Audio, Quicksilver, Mirrored Door/MDD and 2x AGP Gigabit Ethernet AND G4 Cube! This card will fit easily in a G4 Cube by simply removing the faceplate on the card and either not using a faceplate at all or cutting the faceplate. Unfortunately, no new video cards for G4 Cubes have exact Cube-specific faceplates, but this is the first FX5200 found to have full working digital DVI LCD support that easily fits in a G4 Cube with no major modifications! NO VRM MOVE REQUIRED! This FX 5200 card allows you to use nearly any analog VGA CRT or LCD display or any digital DVI LCD display up to 19". Some people have been able to use this card with larger LCD displays, but I don't own one myself so I have no way to guarantee it. Please note however, that this card does not have dual display capabilities so only one port can be used at a time. This card is a great upgrade for any AGP Power Mac owners stuck with slower ATI Rage, Geforce2, or Radeon 7000 graphics technology. Because it's Quartz Extreme enabled and Tiger Core Image enabled, 2D Graphics are fast in MacOS X 10.2.8 Jaguar, MacOS X 10.3.9 PANTHER, and even faster in MacOS X 10.4 Tiger up to and including 10.4.2! Also fully compatible with Apple's Colorsync software. I've used this card with a variety of software, plus games like Unreal Tournamnent, Halo, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein with good frame rates. And all of the CORE IMAGE effects work in Tiger.

This card can be used in any Digital Audio, Quicksilver, MDD (Mirrored Door), Gigabit Ethernet, and G4 Cube models and no additional power connections are needed in a G4 Cube either. The video card has a VGA connection for CRT or VGA (analog) type LCD and a DVI Connection for pure digital output LCDs. Please note that deep sleep is not supported with LCD monitors, but sleep is supported with all VGA monitors. This is a condi

Hi Retha,

Your Sawtooth is an AGP 2X. The material you supplied mentions compatibility with AGP 2X but doesn't mention the Sawtooth specifically.

Nevertheless, it's still worth your while to install the card and see if it works. If it doesn't, then it's probably due to the fact that it doesn't support AGP 2X (in which case you could be justified in asking for a return/refund, as the item description did imply AGP 2X compatibility).

If you still have the owner's manual that came with your G4, read it carefully and take all the necessary precautions before installing this card (otherwise you might damage the computer and/or the card and/or yourself).

If you don't have this information, let me know, and I'll walk you through the process.

Cheers!

Karl
