What is happening is the aluminum is getting polished as the screen frame's aluminum rubs on the computer casing's aluminum...hence no way to get it off...not even with an eraser--sorry to rain on the smart guy above's parade. I was in the apple store today and got a kit with a sheet of plastic that protects the area below the keyboard as well as a sheet of microfiber that protects the keyboard. This is a good investment because not only do I have the polished aluminum marks (definately not pencil, and not erasable), but I can also see spots starting to show up where the keys are rubbing on the monitor screen while the MBP is closed.

just an update, took it to a service provider nand they said they werent gunna fix it, called apple and after much arguing there replacing it for free! hoorah! 😀 thanks apple
If you put the supplied plastic sheet between the screen and the keyboard at shutdown then you won't get marks at all. There are fancy ones to buy that do the same thing. Even leather. You have a good one now, free.
thanks for your help guys...ive had my macbook pro 2 months now. and ive recently discovered the bluetooth doesnt work, and i get kernal panics whenever i restart the pro. should i call apple? what will they say? there is no service centre for over 200 miles.
On a similar note, I have small pencil marks on the corner of the aluminum, if anyone knows a way to possibly get lead writing off the case, post away.
I saw those marks from the keyboard to the screen on a PowerBook recently... Definitely not nice at all. Yet another oversight from Apple on an otherwise fantastic product.
