New Apple Universal Dock Remote Issues?

Okay, so I purchased a new Apple Universal Dock to go with my 160gb iPod Classic, as well as the AV Component Cables to connect it to my TV.

I was expecting to have Menu capabilities with the remote, but upon plugging the iPod Classic 160gb in, the only controls I have with the remote are Play/Pause, Next/Previous, and On/Off. The Volume buttons and Menu button do absolutely nothing.

Discouraged, I decided to try it with my 5th Generation iPod Video 60gb. The iPod Video understands Play/Pause, Next/Previous, On/Off and Volume +/-. But again no Menu.

I then tried a iPod Nano 8gb (2nd generation). I have Play/Pause, Next/Previous and On/Off. No Volume or Menu.

Finally I tried my iPhone... I have Play/Pause, Next/Previous, Volume +/- and On/Off. No Menu here either.

What gives..? Did I get a bum dock, or the menu button is only there for show and does absolutely nothing? Also, why no volume control on iPod Classic or Nano?

Did Apple really design a product that is this semi-lame?

The Menu button on the remote does not perform the same function as pressing the Menu button on the iPod. The Menu button on the Remote changes playback between the iPod and an audio device connected to the audio input port. Because the remote does not have a wheel or a select button, you cannot use the remote to navigate the menus or skip to a different playlist on iPod. You must use the iPod's controls to navigate the menus or choose another playlist.

For What It's Worth,

When I read your post I thought I was reading the one I left with Apple earlier today. I can confirm that you are not seeing things and today this is the best you will get (confirmed by my local Apple Store Technician - not the Apple tech in New Delhi). If you test it a little further you may find that when you start playing a video podcast (playing to TV) and you try to use the forward button the iPod (classic) will take you to music playback mode and you can't get back to the Video podcast you were just playing. If you start playing a video podcast and press MENU you again get random music play back from that point forward. It's really COUNTER INTUITIVE to have a "Menu" button at all on the remote.

As for giving Apple your feedback I agree. It seems to be a reasonable FEATURE REQUEST to have functionality of the Remote's menu button but I also see having TV Out of the iPod, not just when playing a Video, would be necessary as well.

For your convenience I did get and email from the ADC group that I mailed earlier about this (10/16/07) and they provided two better links to give your feedback (see below). But I am starting to think it is a CONSPIRACY really, or a marketing ploy to get you to buy an AppleTV (only $249 at Costco today 😉. Think about it... a 160 GB portable device with a hook up to your TV. Do you think Apple would really want you to use your iPod just like an Apple TV ? (OK it's not the same device but a really close cousin). Apple, am I getting close here?

I just received my universal dock w/remote. From what I understand the menu button is for Front Row when using the iPod as an input device. I can't confim this because I am a Windows user.

As for the volume. When your headphones are not connected, you cannot change the volume. This has always been true because the iPod volume through the dock is set to a standard volume which is at the optimal level to transmit without being distorted. The idea is that you will be outputting the audio to a device which provides volume control (i.e. receiver or PC).

When your headphones are plugged in, the volume control works just fine; even though the screen does not show the volume changing like it used to with the old iPod remote.

Am I missing something.....When I spent over a $100 for the docking with the remote, and cable I thought everything should be in order and working...now you telling the menu button doesn't have the same fuction as the menu on the ipod. I sorry but that doesn't make sense to me at all....I'm really upset that apple did display this information on that site before people start buying their stuff. I and many other people have thousand of music and playlist and the menu buttons should fuction like it name sake for crying out loud. I contact techinal support about this and their told me their were going to send me an email with a link where I can send the non working device back to them....I still have not heard from them yet...so I hope people call and start complain that the menu on the remote doen't work....because *IT DOESN'T.*

I bought this dock also using my $100 refund from my iPhone purchase. Though it does allow you to view photos and video and listen to music this is a terrible device. I cannot use the remote advance photo's, skip chapters in the movies I made, or have it display anything on the TV like song playing and album art. I hope Apple makes a fix for the Apple Remote to do more than raise the volume and fast forward through movies. I also am having the problem of the remote playing a song when i press the forward or reverse button while watching photos. I just want to view and MANUALLY advance a Keynote presentation. How hard can this be for Apple to do? Jeeze!!

Thank goodness I didn't buy this yet. I was looking into purchasing it but if the remote doesn't even work like most people (including myself) thought it would then its not worth it.

I think I may go for the Logitech AudioStation Express instead because it has a speaker + remote and it has outputs for connecting iPod's with video capability to your TV. You can also charge it while its on there. So basically its the Apple Dock only its got a huge speaker and I'm willing to bet the remote works correctly.

My Universal Dock won't charge my iPod either. I've had it for a few months and only recently tried to charge with it because I got a spare power cord.

Due to the fact that the store states that you can charge with it, I find it incredibly disappointing that mine won't charge. I'm probably going to call tech support or take it into the store and ask about it, as I'm not entirely keen on paying $50+ for a glorified stand with a headphone jack.
