Is there a way to play DVD movies on my new external DVD drive. When I put in a DVD it says "There was an Initialization error -A valid DVD player could not be found". I have a Quicksilver G4 that didn't have a Superdrive and my internal CD burner was acting strange so I bought a new external CD/DVD Burner (LaCie Dual DVD+RW Drive with the LightScribe). I have used "Pacifier" and have DVD player installed. I can burn CD's fine. I thought I would be able to view movies with this even though I wasn't able to before.

To play DVD's on an external DVD drive where no internal DVD drive is present, you need to Patch DVD player
Fantastic! It works perfectly, I have never been able to view DVD's and now I can. Thank you very much it worked like a charm. I spent hours trying to figure this out and you helped me get it working in a couple of minutes.
Happy to help out where I can, thanks for posting back with your success.
Hello, I have the same problem but I have OS 9.2.2 Is there a patch for OS9? I have a Fantom firewire external DVD drive.
I have Discribe for burning CDs and that works fine, but I can't play DVDs 😟

Look at
ThinkDVD.
You need to follow all the directions closely; the components have to be installed manually, then the patch is applied.

I was able to install all the components manually and applied the patch. The DVD player opens, I click on play, the DVD starts to spin but never plays. I even increased the allocated memory to 35mb and raised the cache to 128000k. What could I be missing? Does having a PCI Graphics G4 have anything to do with it?
I have also an external dvd-drive, but after installation of the patch, dvd-player still crashes when opened.
Are there some other additional things to be done?

Shouldn't, since that's the point of the patch. Are you sure you removed the original unpatched player? You followed the directions at the link for "Apple DVD Player 2.7 patch v2 (new)"

I just looked at the website and I have put all the individual components in the appropriate folders. I now removed the original unpatched player into the trash as you suggested, but still no luck. The DVD starts to spin, the player says it's loading but it never plays. Maybe I should reinstall?
You could try that.
I have not used OS9 for years, and do not recall all extension issues that may arise. It may be worth posting in the OS9 Usage forum, to see if other OS9 users have any input...

Thank you very much . I like apples DVD player since it is the only one for a slow g3 mac. It is very low on the CPU, others are always over 90 percent while apple is below 50 percent. Now I can use the player under the most harsh setups, like a IDE non apple dvd player in a enclosure converting to a firewire hookup.
No.
What procedure did you use?
Did you use Pacifist first to extract & install DVD Player? Downloading won't work...
If you did not, search discussions for PACIFIST, directions have been posted a number of times

I found that the patch is user pacific. If you log in as another user, the dvd player will error and work again going back to the user who installed it. Hussein, I don,t know if this is related to your help but there is also a software called patchburn that allows more things with the dvd drive if it is non apple but nothing for the Dvd player as far as I know. I can use a legacy toshiba (pc pull) dvdr ide drive because of your help. And further, it still will play dvds with the apple player with the drive in a external firewire enclosure.
