Lost iTunes Plus Upgrades?

Argh, for whatever reason, when I try to upgrade my iTunes library to incorporate the newest iTunes Plus additions, iTunes locks up. To add insult to injury, when I try restarting iTunes and use "Check for Purchases" when I restart the program, it thinks that I successfully downloaded a few of the tracks but locks up when it tries to download the rest.

Is there anyway I can get those "upgraded" versions that I missed, because, I've checked, they didn't make it into my library.

I'm having the same problem. I seem to remember the first upgrade taking a few days due to busy store activity. I'm going to keep trying, but I did send a message to Apple support. Very frustrating as this time the whole application crashes unlike before.

I have a feeeling they will have us reinstall iTunes which I'd like to avoid.

Hi there. I did the following, and it worked:

.5. I'm using OSX -- if you're a windows person, ymmv
1. Quit iTunes (or force quit, depending on your current situation 🙂
2. Rename your iTunes music library folder (mine is in the default location, ~/Music/iTunes) to something else
3. Restart iTunes (it will create a new iTunes folder inside ~/Music)
4. Check for downloads
5. Watch in amazement

Anyway. That worked for me, so it does seem that the problem is somewhere in the replacement of the tracks. Of course, I'm missing like 10 songs from my previous download attempts, so I'll have to go through the process on those, but at least this works for downloading the tracks.

so here is what i assume is Apple's final answer on this problem (for me, anyways). needless to say, its infuriating and belittling. i mean, my stinking PHONE NUMBER as a possible problem?? what is that??

+Dear Henry,+

+Thank you for your patience while Apple has worked to resolve this issue.+

+I have completed my examination of your account and have found it to be in working order. I was not able to recreate the error you have reported, and downloaded the items from order number M578269684 with no trouble. During the course of my examination, I corrected the way your phone number was entered into your account information (incorrectly formatted phone numbers can cause problems).+

+It was necessary to reset your password to test your account. Before attempting to use the iTunes Store, please sign into Apple's My Info page at:+

+Your account information is now as follows:+

+Account Name: lukelucas@mac.com+
+Password: (removed for this posting, of course)+

+After signing in, you will be asked to complete the security questions portion of the transition process.+

+After that, to sign in to the iTunes Store, follow these steps:+

+1) Make sure you're using the latest version of iTunes. It can be downloaded free of charge:+

+2) Open iTunes.+

+3) From the Store menu, choose "Sign In".+

+4) Click the Apple radio button and enter the account name "lukelucas@mac.com" and the password "(password removed for this posting) " (without quotes).+

+Since I was unable to recreate the error message you have encountered, I must conclude there is not a problem with your account, but rather with your computer or the network it is connected to. If the problem persists, I encourage you to try with a different computer using the same network connection. If the problem does not persist, you'll know you need to further troubleshoot your original computer's configuration. Please contact your computer's manufacturer for further assistance.+

+If trying another computer with the same network connection does not work, I urge you to try from a location that uses a different internet service provider. If you are able to connect this way, you'll know you need to contact your internet service provider to troubleshoot this issue.+

+When contacting support representatives, it may be useful to have the following information:+

+"Well Known" TCP and UDP Ports Used By Apple Software Products+
+ http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n106439+

+I also must advise you to change this password to one known only to you. To increase the security of your account, I recommend that your new account password be eight digits and includes both letters and numbers. To do this:+

+1) Click this link: http://phobos.apple.com/accountSummary+

+iTunes will automatically launch and the sign-in dialog will appear.+

+2) Enter your iTunes Store account name and password and then click Account Info.+

+3) Click Edit Account Info on the Apple Account Information screen.+

+4) Enter your new password and click Done.+

+Thank you for being an iTunes Store customer. We appreciate your business.+

Sincerely,

Caitlin

this is just... incredulous. absolutely ridiculous. why is it i can download regular tracks, just fine, but when i attempt to upgrade with iTunes Plus, i can't? because of my +phone number!?!?!?+

i'm done with this. i am as loyal as they come with Apple. i've converted others to Apple users. i waited in line *in the rain* for an iPhone on release day. but this... this is the straw that broke this camel's back.

ok, i'll be man enough to admit something.

it finally worked.

on a lark, before i headed to bed, i tried to log in to my iTMS account, and it finally allowed me to. i "checked my purchases," all 35 were available and ready (as opposed to the incorrect 27), and they downloaded in a snap.

i don't know what they did or how they did it, but it worked. but i'll still say this: Apple, quit attributing the problem to something as inane as an incorrectly formatted phone number. man up, say ya fixed it, and be done with it.

Well, being the switcher I am, I thought I should give it a try later on. You know, this would be the Windows solution (don't change anything, just keep on trying)... 😉

It worked just fine a few moments ago.

To my mind, it is an issue on the shop's side. When iTunes is trying to replace the old ones with the new iTunes Plus versions after the download, something goes haywire once in a while. Maybe, it is a capacity problem on the shop's end? I don't know... It is definetely something worth looking into for Apple.

Have had the exact same problem, freezing iTunes while trying to upgrade something like 50 songs, looks like every time I go back in, it supposedly upgrades one or two before freezing again. Was on the phone with Apple about this and the guy didn't seem to know much about it, suggested I from iTunes to get my $15 back. Next stop, Amazon.com.

I got a response back this afternoon. They reauthorized the missing tracks for me. But before I downloaded them, I removed the albums completely out of my iTunes library just to be on the safe side. They then downloaded without a problem. After the downloads were complete, I replaced the remaining tracks back into my iTunes library. However, if I do any further upgrades, I will follow the same steps again just to make sure!!

This issue has become quite the saga for me. The final solution? The iTunes store re-enabled download of all 1250+ songs and videos I had ever purchased. This allowed me to get the iTunes Plus upgrades successfully. BUT, for some reason two or three copies of EVERYTHING downloaded so I'm now having to go through the laborious process of removing duplicates--we're talking roughly 3000 songs. It is especially difficult to separate iTunes Plus from Protected versions of the same songs. I had hoped to avoid this manual process but after spending a week going back and forth with the iTunes store support (which has no phone support BTW) and an hour with iTunes support (which passed the buck to the iTunes store), I realized I would have to do accept this "solution." Between this issue and the **** poor quality of the iPod classic (even after the most recent updated), I'm really starting to hate Apple. I sure hope they get their act together soon!

Also, I think it's ironic that the more songs you have bought via iTunes, the more screwed you are by this solution. The best customers get screwed the most!
