CPU upgrade to PowerLogic PowerForce47 2ghz Processor

Is this a worthwhile upgrade in place of buying a new computer and has anyone had problems with this upgrade? My Quicksilver works fine but seems slow, I have 640MB SDRAM and will I be giving up 2MB of L3 cache will this be important?

The QS will definitely be much faster, no doubt about it. The 7447's are about 3GHz slower than a similar speed 7457 with L3 Cache but you will not notice this unless you are doing a huge Video project or something of that nature. Besides, there aren't any 7457's @ 2GHz. I just put a OWC/Freescale 1.5GHz 7455 (w/L3 Cache) in my QS and it is a new machine for $300 investment.

I've done a little bit of research about the various processor upgrades as I, too, am thinking about upgrading. What I recollect is that you can expect about a 25-30% increase in performance in many applications (though not all) if the chip has the 2 MB of L3. It that stands to be true, than I suppose you can expect the 2.0 GHz 7447 to perform about the same as a 1.54-1.6 GHz 7457 w/ 2 MB L3. This would only be the case for some applications, though. Additionally, it would seem that PL has some good power and heat saving technology on their boards but you must also be wary about their past customer service issues. I'm still debating if I want to risk it. :/
