Plugging in a USB device causes everything else to stop working?

Hi there.

I have an iMac 17" Core 2 Duo 2.00Ghz with 1GB RAM. I also have the new wired aluminium keyboard.

When plugging in my printer, with a memory card in - on occasions all other USB devices stop working; this is the keyboard and anything else, such as my iPod Shuffle dock or any other peripheral.

This is really annoying, as the only way to get use of my keyboard back - is to restart the machine! I can't replug in the keyboard, or sleep the machine. Nothing works except a reboot.

I will post a copy of the log file underneath - I tried to google for this, but didn't come out with any results. Please help! This is such an annoying thing! Thanks!

P.S - Sorry if I have pasted too much info underneath, just trying to be as helpful as possible!!

You haven't mentioned the model of printer and it's age. USB has gone through quite a lot inside the last 12 months. The early version of 10.4.10 wasn't good for me, but that was a couple of audio devices. One of those had a new firmware update released by the manufacturer that sorted things. Have a check for something similar for your printer.

Hey, thanks for the prompt reply. The printer is a HP Photosmart C4180 - and I cannot find any updates for anything on my computer, be it firmware or system updates.

I had another look through the logs and also found this:

It doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever, but I thought it might to one of you geniuses!

Are you plugging the printer into the keyboard as opposed to directly into the mac? I have had problems with that in the past. There appears to be quite recent (2 months) software updates for the printer.

I expect you have tried these, but worth typing!
