Key Photo Attributes?

I have a picture in a Gallery folder created by combining two other photos. The rest of the pictures are photos which have been cropped or resized.
When I try to set the composite picture as the key photo the choice is grayed out. The other pictures appear to be OK as possible key photo choices.
What attribute(s) make a photo eligible or NOT for use as a key photo? Why should a photo which is of the same file type and about the same size not be eligible as a key photo choice?

Thanks, but Nope!
At first I thought this answer was, at least, partly correct. Then I remembered I had created the image by combining two different images (Blue Angels in blue sky and a sky with puffy white clouds) in Photoshop. I then imported it into iPhoto. When I tried to make it a key photo I saw that *Make Key Photo* was grayed out.
I then learned I could set an image as the *top of the pile* by dragging it to the small icon in the upper left of the Gallery page. In that way it works, but still would like to know why it's grayed out.

I have the same problem. The option "make key photo" is greyed out for some photos, but not others.
I tried dragging the photo I want as a key photo to the icon and it worked. The icon changed.
Except the problem extends to my .Mac web gallery as well. There seems to be a problem with the .Mac gallery understanding which photo is supposed to be the key photo. It's using a photo I have never chosen to be a key photo.
I don't get it...
