iphone blank with ..circle in middle of screen?help

tried to sync up ...iphone totally black screen except for AT&T at top and time but have weird circle rotating in middle of screen..but nothing happening. how do i get out or reset??

I am traveling and have the same problem. I do not even see the AT&T name and time. My screen is COMPLETELY BLACK with the exception of the rotating circle in the middle of the screen. This has been going on for nearly an hour!!!! Any advice for how to reboot. I have removed and replaced the sim card and have tried to turn off to reset, but no luck... Can't get it to turn off comepletely,s o it can reactivate. HELP!
