iTunes Cannot Find iPod, Random Album Art & Empty Playlists

I have an iPod Classic which is behaving strangely. This is my second iPod Classic with the same issues. Apple Support told me to take the old one back to the Apple store and have it replaced, which didn't fix my problem and only managed to waste more of my time and lose the engraving.

I have three problems. The first and most annoying one is that I can only synch the iPod one time when I put it in the cradle. If I want to add a new podcast or movie, I can't just click to sync again in the same session, I have to pull the iPod out and put it back on the cradle because iTunes cannot find it after it completes the first sync. In order to make changes to the selected movies, TV shows, podcasts or photos, I have to make the changes and re-sync while the first sync is taking place. If that first sync is over, iTunes will not be able to find the iPod Classic again until I remove it and connect it again (which also has the bonus of losing the changes I was trying to make). This happens whether the iPod is hooked up directly to my Mac or through a hub. This behavior never happened on my 60 GB 5th generation iPod, but both iPod Classics do the same thing. Needless to say, this quirk makes it extremely frustrating to manage the contents of my iPod.

The second problem is that the iPod Classic will switch album art at random. On iTunes the album art is correct but certain songs in the iPod Classic will have the wrong art seemingly at random. I may be able to correct it song by song by making some slight change to the song and forcing it to be updated on the iPod, but there is no way to predict what song will have the wrong art next and once fixed, some other song will display the wrong art.

The last problem is that some songs that load in all our non classic, iPods do no load into the iPod Classic resulting in some empty playlists. The songs are either MP3s or non-DRM AACs and play perfectly well in my 5th generation iPod but fail to show up in the Classic.

Some more background info: I originally called Apple about the sync problem. After trying several fixes, I was told to restore the iPod. While trying to update iTunes returned error 1461. On a second try I got error 1430. Because of these errors the tech told me that Apple would replace the iPod, which I did as explained above. When I got home with the new unit, I had similar errors with the replacement when iTunes tried to update to 1.0.2. Searching on the internet I found a solution, deleting the iPod update files in the library. This fix allowed the update to occur but the other problems remain. Basically the tech had me replace the iPod and lose my engraving, for no good reason, only because the tech didn't know what he was doing. So far, this iPod is not as reliable as my old 5th generation iPod. The only problem with that one was the smaller capacity. The new iPod is about half full.

Am I the only one having these issues? I can't imagine I got two iPods with the same defects. Is this a problem with the iPod Classic? Do you have a solution? Someone throw me a bone here!

at least I havn't heard that issue until now.
I would have said you got a corrupted iPod, but since you exchanged it and the problem persists, that doesn't seem to be the case. I'd say your problems are somehow linked. It seems you have connection issues and I would say that those cause the art/playlist problems. there are twp reasons for this problem I can imagine:

1) your iTunes library or one or more files are somehow corrupted. The new classic seems to be very picky and reacts very intense on file/library corruption, much more than the 5G iPods did (hopefully that will be fixed).
you could try to restore your iPod, backup your iTunes library files, delete the original library files and then just drag two songs or one album into iTunes and sync and see if your problems persists. if it doesn't you know it's somehow related to your library.

2) My favorite: Your connection cable is broken. When you exchanged your iPod, did you keep your connection cable? This would explain your problems updating the firmware. I know someone who head similar problems and it was due to a faulty connection cable.
