Turn down the volume of built-in speaker before playing music

So I was wondering if there was any way to turn down the volume of the built in speaker prior to playing music/video. I imagine that if I'm REALLY quick and pause the action, I can turn it down, but I'd rather not have to race against time.

The context for this, is the desire to show someone else video on the iPhone (say a National Geographic video podcast) without the audio blasting forth.

Any ideas?

Well, I figure that is one route, but seeing as I don't typically carry earbuds with me, I need some other solution.

This, along with video podcast playing only when you access them as "Video", and the Yahoo push issues are the only thing that mar the experience in my opinion. Otherwise, I'm enjoying the phone -- often using it when it'd be easier to just use the computer in front of me to accomplish the same thing.

Right, but I want to access that BEFORE the music/video starts playing. As it stands now, I start playing something and it's a race against time to turn down the volume to the level I want it at. Sometimes I'm successful, other times not.

I'd like to be able to turn down the volume for the music/video, and THEN play whatever clip I'm looking to play.

So you're saying the phone doesn't remember the previous setting you had it at and jumps up or something...?

..or you want to hit play and have it not play so you can adjust the volume first...sorry can't help if that's the case. It kind of doesn't make sense from a UI perspective, when I press play or start a video I want it to play....different strokes for different folks tho 😀

I'm not sure if it does all the time. Today it seems to have remembered the setting. Beyond it remembering the setting, I'd like to be able to adjust it so that I can set it appropriate to my current situation, not the situation the last time I played it.

Never seemed to be an issue with my ipod nano, but that's because it didn't have an internal speaker.
