iTunes won't sync music to iPhone

I am an owner of a new 8G iPhone, running on Windows XP. Some of my experience is good, but I'm having a couple of major issues.

Main issue: I can't sync my music. I try, it starts, I have enough room, but about 10 seconds in, my status bar reads, "optimizing photos for Joe's iPhone" then nothing else syncs. A minute later, the iphone is bumped from iTunes, and I have to restart to get it recognized again. Nothing I have tried works.

Please help, I want to love this thing.

Me Too!! Same problem! It syncs Contacts, Bookmarks, Email accounts etc all fine. Problem is with the Music and Photos. Does exactly what u described, starts out transfering the music and then suddenly kicks the Iphone out of Itunes. Similar with the photos. Wont sync them to my computer.

Do u think both of us have got phones from a defective batch?

Thanks for the responses, but nothing is working yet! I tried reinstalling iTunes cleanly, still the same result. And yes, I am syncing playlists, and I have tried different arrangements and combinations.

I originally got the thing to sync once by restarting the device in some windows menu, through some advice from a discussion here, but now I can't find that string anymore. Any advice there?

Also, those albums/songs that originally DID sync are a little squirrelly; album artwork is only there sometimes and some artwork is on the wrong albums!

Thanks again for reading.

In the old days this was a common issue on the iPod when there were some songs in the library that were corrupt -- music would start to sync and then stop.

I dunno -- probably isn't that issue but if you have music you haven't purchased from the iTunes store it's worth checking out. Easiest way (of course, assuming you have backed up your music, which you always need to do) is to delete it all from your library and then add back only a few songs and see if you can get these to sync. With luck you can find a pattern (if nothing more it will eliminate this as a possibility -- use songs only bought from the store or ripped directly from a CD you own using iTunes itself).

I sorted the Photos problem. What u have to do is UNLOCK the phone when it is on the dock while syncing by using the slider and get it on the home screen.

It then syncs the photos just fine.

Wish Apple could have just programmed it to show us an error msg saying 'Pls Unlock phone", instead of making us go thru all this trouble.

The music problem still not sorted.. any suggestions?

Are you trying to send all iTunes music or a particular Playlist or Playlists only?

What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far including have you tried a complete Restore of the iPhone?

You might be better served contacting AppleCare but you will probably be asked to go through some of the same troubleshooting steps you have already tried.

ALL,

The reason your music won't sync is because all the files you are trying to sync are above the 8GB limit...if you deselect all of the files you want to sync leaving less than 7 or so GB to sync only then you'll be fine. Worked on my first try. For some reason, Apple never put a warning in that said "the filesize you are trying to sync is larger than the 7.26GB of free space on your iPhone". So deselect video, podcasts, music or whatever it is that is too big and retry.

Word up.

Tried both - entire Itunes music as well as single playlists.

I dont think i need to restore the phone coz its doing everything else perfectly, including syncing photos, contacts etc

I think the problem could be because all the music i have on my itunes is free stuff downloaded from the net.

But i dont see why apple should have a problem with that coz i could send it all to my ipod without any problems.

Then it's what I said -- there are some songs in your library that are corrupt or otherwise problematic.

All of my music is free stuff either downloaded or ripped from CDs I own. None of it comes from iTunes and it all works. But you need to know that there is a lot of stuff out there that can cause problems because of the tags or other issues.

So do what I suggested -- delete all from iTunes and start with just a few songs to see if those will sync (best bet is to rip a CD and just use those). If it works then add more until you find the ones that are causing problems. It may take a while, but eventually you will find the culprit(s).
