lacie usb2 ext. hdd flashing orange - not recongnised?

Have been given a lacie usb2 drive to get some files off.

plugged in but all i get is a flashing orange light? Theres not even any disc spinning noise? the person who gave it to me said that it worked fine on her mac.

Have opened disc utility and its not recognised there either?

imac-g5 (flat panel), Mac OS X (10.4.2), purchased december 2005

Hi steveOooo-

How is it powered? Is it plugged directly into the Mac? Did you try a different port or cable?

nope stil nothing - its a silver porche hdd (usb only)

tried two dif usb cables - restarting... still nothing...

im now going to plug it into a windows pc and see if that recognises it?

yes i have had no probs with a western digital usb2 hdd, ipod, mouses etc.. - this wd hdd works fine and has done for the past year.

Have now hooked up lacie to windows pc and still nothing.

Just the flashing orange light of death...

Have just been told by the guy who gave me the drive that its a NTSF formatted drive and will only show on windows xp - ive already seen if it will show on windows and nothing!

when i got my seagate drive i believe it was formated to NTSF and still showed in finder - just coudnt write to it = any ideas anyone? would a NTSF drive show in finder

Hi steveOooo-

If it won't even show up in Disk Utility then there is no way to reformat it on the Mac. However, I think the drive itself might be bad.

Have you checked LaCie's website just to make sure that you aren't missing something there?

yeah - have downloaded the manual - nothing
tried to post a ticket but need to register drive (its not mine)

i think your right, f///ed drive. - its apprently 'the master drive' theres no copies of stuff on it! oh dear

Hi steveOooo-

Is it under warranty perhaps?

Any chance of taking the case apart, extracting the drive, and trying another case? It may set you back a few bucks but it may be that the drive itself is fine but the case and circuitry are fried.

well, the person whom owns the drive stuck it in the freezer for 4 hours last night... she hasnt tried it yet - hopefully she has earthed herself. will report back to everyone and anyone as to what happens with this.

SO glad i opted to buy a seagate fw400 drive as apposed to a lacie ds 400/800fw drive.
