songs are greyed out in iTunes

Hello All, I have an Intel iMac running (10.4.10) and iTunes (7.4.2). Can someone explain why I can see all the content of my iPod mini (1.4.1) in iTunes, but I can't play anything when connected to my iMac? I have the same problem when I connect to iTunes on my work Mac (unsure of the OS version) with iTunes 7,4,2. Unless I have lost my mind, I seem to remember being able to bring my iPod into work and play my music through iTunes.

Grey text when you look at the content and a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen just indicates that the iPod is set to update automatically (sync). If you want to play the iPod songs through iTunes, delete songs from the iPod, drag songs from iTunes, add playlists to the iPod etc. you need to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and videos". The text will change from grey to black and everything will be directly accessible through iTunes:
Managing content manually on iPod
iPod 101: Fill 'er Up

Something to remember about using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
