Same thing is happening to me. It just started happening. I had Windows XP at first and I recently upgraded to Vista (Home Premium) and this problem began. I plug in my iPod and it doesn't have that problem. I also plugged my iPhone into my sister's laptop and my iPhone was able to get the update. So I guess my computer update screwed everything up. Please help...

A few things to look at.
1. open add/remove programs from the control panel and make sure apple mobile device is installed.
1A. If not uninstall apple software update, itunes, and quicktime. Then reinstall itunes.
2. with the iphone connected, open computer management, look under services and make sure apple mobile device support is started.
2A. if you try to start it and it stops with a message that some services stop because there is not a task to perform, then you have software loaded on your computer that is blocking that service. This link from the apple support website might help out. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
3. If previous fails and windows only wants to load the camera driver for the iphone then open device manager right click on the iphone that shows up under imaging devices and uninstall.
3A. disconnect the iphone and reconnect. When windows detects new hardware, do not let it automatically install the driver. try to force windows to load the driver from c:\windows\system32\drivestore\usbaapl_*

Hope this helps out.

It SHOULD recognize the iPhone as a digital camera; this is separate from iTunes recognizing it. When you sync both your photo application and iTunes should open to save the photos taken by the camera. Yours is working half right. your problem is that iTunes isn't recognizing it.

1. Make sure you have iTunes 7.5.0.20.

2. Make sure you are using a USB 2 port directly on the computer, not a hub.

3. Try uninstalling iTunes, reboot, then reinstall iTunes.

4. Try a different cable.

Come back if none of these help.

Hey all -

I'm a Windows Systems Manager, and just resolved this issue for one of my users who got a new iPhone for Christmas. The problem appears to be that Windows is not properly loading the usbaapl.sys file which allows the iPhone to be recognized as something other than just a camera.

Try manually installing the driver by doing the following:
*Right-click "My Computer" and select Manage
*Select Device Manager
*In the right-hand pane, expand Imaging Devices and select the iPhone (camera)
*Right-click the iPhone camera and select Properties
*Click the Driver tab
*Click "Update Driver..."
*When asked if you should connect to the internet, select No, not this time
*Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
*Check "Include this location in the search" and point it to:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE\usbaapl_4351B7DAFF62FD33510D77DFAE3CF8CC82517571

Click Next

The driver should install, and now when you open iTunes you will see your iPhone.

All the best and Happy New Year.

Ok...good news for those who have a second computer with Windows XP!!!

I got to thinkings and realized that since my computer with Windows XP recognized iphone with no problem, the driver "usbaapl.sys" had to be installed on it.

I went into the Windows\System32\DRVSTORE file and found the usbaapl_4351B7DAFF62FD33510D77DFAE3CF8CC82517571 folder. I then copied it to my computer with Windows Vista, moved it to the same folder...System32\DRVSTORE...and then opened Device Manager, right clicked on the apple ipone icon listed under portable devices and then clicked on "update driver" and from there, followed the instructions to search for the driver in the appropriate location.

I then opened itunes, and Miracles of Miracles!!!!! It worked!!!

For those of you who don't have the second computer, maybe you can email me and see if can be emailed to you.
