WD MyBook Pro drive? is the firmware current? is it formatted HFS+?

Are you trying to connect the Nikon downstream off the MyBook? bad idea. Never mix consumer electronics and FW hard drives sharing same cable and bus, data errors from "noise."

connect any device directly to Mac Pro. If you have a lot of devices, you may need a FW hub or PCIe card.

And don't daisy chain the two drives either.

Your Mac Pro has two internal SATA ports that are available that can be run to external eSATA drives. I much much prefer SATA interface for now (and I have half a dozen FW800 drives for backup only) but also 7 eSATA drives.

Try "reset the FW ports and bus" by unplugging everything, no power, all the cables. Let sit 15 minutes. And use Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior to VERIFY the drives before going forward.

The WD hard drives are WD 500 ELEMENTS. I take the card out of the camera and put into a card reader, the card reader and the hard drives are connected to the MAC Pro via a Belkin 7 port hub. I have also just purchased a Sandisk Firewire reader connected via one of the ports on the back of the monitor.

I was playing about and found I could load all the images into iPhoto and then into a folder on the hard drive???

Thanks for all you help

I got a the same error code with my 1TB WD drive. I've got it hooked up to a PowerMac G5 via FireWire 800. It won't let me copy anything to the external drive. It says "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "...." could not be read or written. (Error code - 36)" Any Ideas? Could it be the same glitch?

And as far as the D200, which is a really sweet camera by the way, I've always found importing pictures from the camera's USB works better than using a card reader...

Not to pile on but I am getting the same error code and I have a Western Digital MyBook. I store a lot of my video files for iTunes on the external, but now the data has been corrupted. I can watch a video without any hitch through quicktime directly from the external but if I try to watch it through iTunes or copy a file to my desktop it gives me that code and then crashes the finder.

I am getting the same message trying to upload to iDisk. It comes like this:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)".
It's being like this for a week. Being trying to contact support, but no luck.
Transmition gives this:
"Could not send request body: connection was closed by server. Error"
Getting nuts here...

i have the same problem,
I just bought 2 new elements western digital 320 gig hardisk...
THis is what happened.
I was trying to load movie files in both of my HArd disk. I loaded the first harddisk from a PC successfully, .. Then I bought a new MACbook with leopard, 2 gig processor, 2 gig ram.
I tried using the new macbook to copy the files of the first haddisk to the 2nd harddisk.
then I got error code 36 ..this is the exact error.
<The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "elephant dreamhd.avi" could not be read or written. (Error code-36)>
I was so disappointed. Good thing I didnt trow my old acer PC,aspire 5672wlmi,1.66gig processor,1gig ram, that i used to load the 1st HD. I tried to copy all the files from first HD to the 2nd HD and it is successful using the PC. no problems at all.
When I finish copying,, i tried to replicate the problem again in MAC by deleting the file that has caused the error in MAC and recopying again using macbook,, and viola,,same error in mAC,,.error code 36..
actually i'm copying a lot of avi files, then i first encountered the error, i just tried deselecting the file that caused the error, then again , it errors out again for a different file. IN pc, no problems at all.
I don't think the problem is in the HD, both my HD are new and i don't think the problem is only the files. ANd when i tried copying the same files in PC, there were no problems at all. I think the problem is with the MACBOOK. I think finder has a bug.
I'm a new PC to mac user. I though i will shift to mac permanently, just like most of the people i knew. I thought i'd be one of them because I read a lot of good this about the mac OS already but because of this error 36, i now having a second thought.
I already read a lot of forums about error code 36, and I did not find any solution.

Hi there,

I think the big question is are we all using WD ????????

No, I am using a USB-stick from the brand "Transcend" (Type: JetFlash 1Gb) with FAT32 formatting. I have chosen FAT32, because I am working in a mixed environment of PCs and Macs.

I have experienced the Error Code -36 lots of times in the last couple of years on:
1.) my PowerBook G4 (Pismo; with Panther up to v9);
2.) my iBook G4 (with Tiger up to v11);
3.) and on my Alu iMac 20inch (with Tiger v11).

I cannot seem to find a trend, when it occurs in my cases, but when it happens it will not want to go away.

I have re-formatted my usb flashdrive to see, if that would solve the issue, but in vain.

I hope, someone will find the solution to this problem, because it is pretty annoying.

May be it is the FAT32-formatting that triggers this error? But I am no expert on this.

Ciao!

it appears that a lot of people are getting this error message

according to Mac Help, error code -36 is a file system ioErr "I/O error (bummers)" - interesting description!
i've had this problem on my old G4 iMac and found that the firewire iSight camera to be the problem.
trying to copy from the HD to a LaCie FW400/800/USB drive (using the 400 cable), certain files couldn't be copied.
after unplugging the iSight from the mac it allowed me to copy with no problem.
could be a faulty FW cable as suggested at the bottom of:

see also:

may i suggest if you are using a FireWire drive, disconnect all other FW devices to perform your action...
