Ipod turns on, then shuts off, repeats

my ipod is having some kind of hardware failure. this is my third one. ive had my computer since summer, my first ipod i got around the same time. until about a month ago, my ipod and comp were working fine together then one time when i disconnected it, the ipod kinda shut itself off. then the apple logo appears, it lights up ad then with a strange clicking noise, the ipod shuts down (goes blank). then the same thing happens over and over again until the battery dies. i got it fixed, synched with another comp and it worked fine. then when i plugged it into my comp (i have a PC-Acer) it messed up. i have gotten 2 replacements, and they all messed up in the same way. and the apple store people keep telling me that the hardware is failing in the computers. does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks man! I just got an ipod classic 160gb today from my wife and I got this reboot looping problem after updating the system software through my PC less than an hour after I turned it on.

Went through your steps to restore the system after first going into disk mode. Took a while but it works fine so far.

You saved my xmas 🙂

I just bought an iPod yesterday and already got to experience this behavior. After doing some research I found out it is called a "Reboot Loop." If you do a google search on "iPod Reboot Loop" you can find out useful information such as to get it to stop (while the battery is still working):

1) Slide the hold button button to hold position (red showing) and back
2) hold down the center button and play/pause on the ring until it goes into "Disk Mode" (you may have to try this a few times -- it seems to work better in the beginning of the loop).

Now you can connect back up to your computer and do a restore your factory settings (which gives you a perfectly workable iPod with no content).

The underlying cause seems to be certain things in the info for your songs. Letters with accent marks are one cause. Going to the info for my foreign songs and replacing them with non-accented letters seems to be getting me on the way to fixing this problem.

Not what I wanted to be learning on my first day of iPod ownership!

My 30G photo is doing it too. I've sent it back to Apple twice now and they keep returning saying they found no faults with it by doing a restore. But once I plug it back into my MacBook and try and sync it with iTunes it goes back to the turning on and off again. Its quite frustrating.
It seems to be like that with other Mac computers not just my own as well.

Yea thanks! after about 5 ipods tho i figured out how to reset it but everytime i plugged it into my comp it would do it again. the accents in my foreign songs arent teh problem, but i had one single song that was corrupt..and once i deleted it my ipod now functions. of course now im stuck with a replacement and.. if only id have known sooner i couldve kept my old ipod. ergh
