What is 'open using rosetta' ?

What does open using rosetta mean? I saw this option on Firefox.
Does firefox run slower if I don't choose 'run using rosetta'?

It's a means of forcing an Intel or universal application to run as though it were a PowerPC application. Running in Rosetta will actually be slower on an Intel Mac.
