Using iMac as just as display.

Hi, I was thinking about buying a MacBook, waiting untill the end of November before buying one (hoping a new one may be released!) However, I use photoshop and illustrator quite a lot and wondered if I could use my current iMac to display the MacBook's screen. This would be helpful as my iMac screen is much bigger. Is this at all possible?

Well this would be possible (even easier on an old tray loader) but it would require making up a special cable to the connector to the monitor section. It would be a lot easier just to use a standard VGA monitor. These are around very cheap, most people are giving them away. Otherwise go whole hog an get a new Cinema display.

One of my clients is a pro photographer and I set her up with a Mac Pro and 2 20" monitors. Every time we work together on photo tutorials she thanks me for making her get those two monitors. (actually I wanted the 23" but she got a deal on the 20"s)
Besides the ease of working in such a space she says her clients are always so impressed. Now we have to find her a double wide mouse pad.

Jack, Welcome to the discussion area!

Which iMac are you asking about? You posted in the G3 iMac CRT discussion area.

Your system preference indicated iMac G5.

The response from spudnuty was in reference to a G3 iMac CRT. This requires dismantling the G3 iMac and modifying it.

If you are asking about an iMac G5, the iMac does not have any direct video inputs. However ScreenRecycler might do what you want.
