Animated .gif files

I have a couple of questions about animated .gif files ... the default for opening them seems to be Preview but this just shows the first frame of the animation so I changed it to Safari which plays them as you would expect ... is that the best program for viewing them?
Also, I tried sending a friend an animated .gif in an email using Mail (I checked the 'Send Windows Friendly files' box) but he could only see the first frame of the file - have I done something wrong or is the problem at his end? (he is using Windows 2000)

If you wish to view an animated GIF, you need to open it in a web browser. Many e-mail programs don't have the ability to view them. Com

If you wish to edit an animated GIF on a Mac, see this utility:

If you wish to e-mail a GIF, I suggest archiving it in the Finder with control-mouse click's Archive option, and tell your Windows 2000 recipient to open the file with Winzip before viewing it in a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Hi
I do have a vague memory of being able to play animated gif in Preview in the past, although I cannot remember if it was with Panther or Tiger.
I remember a little circle with a triangle in the toolbar, and just click to play/stop.
Is this feature gone all together? That sounds rather strange to get rid off such a facility??
Please let me know
Thank you

I have read the help files. Its says
Quote: "Preview shows all the frames in the animated GIF. When you click a frame, the animation stops and Preview displays that frame." end Quote

I believe that means the animation should be working as one opens a gif.
Although I remember reading the help files previously, and a little button was there to start/stop.
I also remember having to use Safari to be able to have view the images in full speed. So that may be the reason this facility to be removed. The name Preview is misleading now.

Thank you for the information.
