I use cox as my isp so I have problems with sending mail using my iPhone. Having researched the fix, I see I need to change my outgoing mail server for the phone. I have picked through the phone settings repeatedly and cannot find where to make that change. Do i need to do this from the MacBook I synch with using iTunes or am i missing it on the phone itself?
If you transferred the account settings from your Mac via the iTunes sync process, make the changes with the Mail.app on your Mac and then sync to transfer the change to your iPhone or delete and manually recreate the account on your iPhone and no longer sync the account settings with the iPhone.
Is the email address an @cox.net or is it a @gmail.com, @aol.com, @mac.com or at a @yahoo.com address?
If you configured under the preconfigured GMail, AOL, .Mac or Y!Mail options, the outgoing mail server should be configured for any location, and there is not an option to change the outgoing server for those accounts.
Actually it is a .mac e-mail address, I just use cox as my ISP at the house. I'm at the office now, so I can't even look at my MacBook where I synch, but I figure there has to be a way to change the server via the phone.
AARRGGHH!! This is killing me! I cannot find where to change the outgoing mail server anywhere, in phone settings or iTunes. Can someone tell me the actual buttons to push to find it? Thanks.
Do you use the Mail application on your Mac to access this email account?
If so, you can change the SMTP server settings for the account with the Mail application.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for the account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below for this SMTP server.
After making the change, select OK to save the changed setting and then re-sync your iPhone with iTunes to transfer the changed setting with the Mail application to your iPhone.
Or if you have updated to 1.1.1 with your iPhone, go to Settings > Mail.
Select the account.
Under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), you can change the Host Name or outgoing mail server, the account's user name and password. Select Advanced and under Outgoing Settings you can select Use SSL, change the Authentication type of the SMTP server is authenticated and the Server Port used for the SMTP server.
I have 1.1.1. I go to Settings - Mail...no reference to outgoing anything. I go further with the "Advanced" button, and the only outgoing options are Use SSL on/off, Authentication, and server port. The server port just offers a number input, ad authentication is "greyed out." I can't see anywhere to change it on the phone. If I change it to "cwmx.com" or smpt1.attglobal.net on my mac, I won't be able to send mail from the laptop, right?
Yes, cox is one of the problem providers where you have to use an alternate outgoing server, I just can't find where it says "outgoing server" anywhere on the phone itself. I tried creating a new account, but still no spot for "outgoing server." Do you know what button path to follow to get to it?
you cannot change the outgoing server for the pre-configured email accounts (.mac being one of them) on the iphone itself...you can only change the outgoing server on the iphone itself if you setup a email account which is not one of the preconfigured email accounts, like if you setup your cox email on the iphone then you'd be able to change the outgoing server on the iphone...to change your .mac settings change it in your mail app and then sync with iphone
When you configure an account with one of the preconfigured options, like .Mac, it is already configured to use an outgoing server on a port (587) that won't be blocked on most internet connections.
However, .Mac won't relay for your cox.net address.
Is the issue with sending out email on your cox.net address or you .Mac address?
Incoming mail server settings at top and SMTP server settings below at bottom.
The Host Name field is where you change or enter a different SMTP server for the account.
Select the Advanced button below where you can select authentication and use SSL for the SMTP server or enter a different server port for the SMTP server.
You should be able to change it when you select your cox.net email account under Settings -> Mail, but not when you select a .Mac, AOL, GMail or Y!Mail account that was configured with the preconfigured settings. All of the preconfigured options configure the outgoing mail server to use one that will relay, with authentication, regardless of which network you are on, unless that network blocks access. Many networks block port 25, so the preconfigured options use either 465 or 587.
Yes, cox.net will not relay unless you are on their network. If you are on an EDGE connection with AT&T you can relay through cwmx.com.
