I think my 160 GB iPod is messed up..

I got a black 160 GB iPod Classic from Best Buy the other day. It all looked fine but when I turned it on it said I had 148 GB instead of the 160 GB. Even on my iTunes it says my capacity is 148 GB instead of 160.. My first thought was "okay, well maybe theres just stuff on here that takes up space". Well whenever I try to go to a new song or some other thing that takes some sort of loading it starts making a noise and a little vibration, kind of like how if you change CD slots in a car CD thingy. I just figured that it took a long time to load since it was so "advanced". Also, when I try to scroll or make my volume change it takes a lot of effort because I have to push down on the scroll wheel. Yesterday I was doing what I normally do to scroll on an iPod and it was not moving at all. I made sure there was nothing else touching the wheel and there wasnt. And when I do scroll it does not do it very effectively and is very slow. Is that supposed to happen and are you suppose to have 148 GB instead of 160 GB?

FYI...148 GB is the correct capacity for a formatted 160 GB ipod....the firmware takes up 12 GB....god knows why....the same exact features are on the 8GB Nano with room for a few thousand songs to spare.

So in answer to your question....no, it's not messed up....it just doesn't work right or do what it's supposed to....that's Apple's business model now....release products that don't function correctly and then act like the person complaining is a lunatic.

It is not the firmware that is taking up 12 GB of disk space.

On any hard disk the "formatted" capacity is always less than the advertised capacity of the disk. For example, my PC has a 300GB hard drive, but after formatting it only has 279 GB of actual space. On the 160G iPod, the actual formatted capacity is 148GB.

The various pieces of data that comprise the file and directory names as well as the information needed to track the files on the disk take up that other space on top of the firmware.

The firmware itself should be less than 100MB given that the firmware download is only 54 MB.

I have the same iPod as you've got and I have a similar issue where the scroll wheel is slow to manage volume or even the menu function. (My GF is on her second iPod mini and it is malfunctioning again to where she will have to have it replaced again). My iPod freezes sometimes and I cannot access the menu. This is bothersome while I am driving and I have to ignore it until I come to a light or a full stop to address it. It always resolves itself but it's sticky. I've had problems with Apple's products before and I hope this isn't a case where they are selling inferior quality stuff.

My new iPod 160 works crazy. When I plug it in the apple dock works with a few issues like a re-boot by it self when I want to watch some videos on the TV. In the other hand I have a JBL radial (you can send your iPod photos and video to a TV monitor), the problem with this is that all the time it says that TV Out is enabled, please connect with the video accessory. How I can say to my iPod that it is all ready plug on it? And if I push the play bottom it doesn’t works for that reason. Could somebody tell what happen with my iPod? Thanks a lot in advance.
