G5 and Sony Grand WEGA at 1080i - overscan problem

I have successfully connected my PowerMac G5 (with 64mb FX 5200) to a Sony E55A20 HDTV. The only problem I have is that of overscan--the edges of the display (including the menubar and some of my Dock) are eaten up by it. Makes sense. The same happened with my Dell (with 128mb FX 5200).

Problem? The Dell's NVIDIA drivers provided with an overscan compensation feature that lowered the output resolution. In browsing the forums I have noticed many Mac mini (snicker) owners use DisplayConfigX to shrink their resolutions just a little bit to make it work. Problem--they were all using 720p. Other problem--DisplayConfigX does not support interlaced modes.

Query: Is there any other program/driver that will give me overscan compensation with an interlaced display? Preferably for free? That resolution was just too good to pass up.

I have used DisplayconfigX to adjust overscan on my G5 with a 9600XT outputting 1920x1080i to an lcd TV. The FAQ on the diplayconfigX site is out of date. You'll see that in the version history that 1.07 and above support interlaced timings. Just play with the front and back porch numbers for a little bit and you should be able to get rid of all (or most) of the overscan.

Alternatively, you could try Switchres. Personally, I have found DiplayconfigX easier to use.

Hope that helps.
