How to clean a lanyard

I haven't found anything on the web about this: what's the best way to clean a lanyard that people have found? There was an accident in my backpack involving cough syrup and my Shuffle lanyard (specifically, the one in my 2-week-old battery pack). Should dish soap & water do the trick? I don't know fabrics, so I have no clue what's safe for this.
