iPod Classic Scroll Wheel not working

Hello-
My scroll wheel sometimes does not work, and sometimes is very jumpy (therefore hard to choose the track I want). Can the wheel be cleaned? Or is there any troubleshooting that can be done?

I had a 30 GB iPod and it worked great with the DLO Action Jakcet. I recently in past week bought an 80GB iPod Classic and it does not work with the DLO Action Jacket. It works fine out of the case. The scroll wheel does not respond to other cases with a scroll wheel cover as well. I am really disappointed in the drawbacks. The newer models are worse than the originals. However, I came up with my own fix, I took an exacto knife and cut away the plastic for the scroll wheel and left it for the face plate to keep it clean. This is one solution.

I wouldn't say that this is a dirt-problem or anything. The classic's wheel is less responsive than those of the 5g iPods. It got better with FW 1.0.2 (a lot) but it's still a little jumpy (just try to rate anything on your iPod. When you start to move your finger on the wheel, nothing happens at all. After about 1/4 rotation or so, it adds (or removes) 2 stars nearly simultaneously.
I hope that the wheel-responsiveness will get more improvements in FW1.0.3, but I think that everyone has that problem right now and it's not a dirt-issue or anything like that

I bought a new iPod classic today, got it home loaded my music and then sat down to check out the new features. Right off the bat, :"what the **** is wrong with the scroll wheel". after trying to convince myself nothing was wrong i did a search and found out a lot of people are having the same problem. It takes at least a second for it to start responding, its jumpy, sluggish, difficult, all things i've never experienced from an ipod before. This would be my 3rd ipod, 2 died, i've probably used 15-20 others through friends and work, and I'm returning my ipod classic tomorrow, its a bummer, sounds like the 5th gen ones are better.
