Hard drive not recognised

Is it after market or upgraded Hard Disk?

I'm also experiencing this problen on an MBP with a 120gb disk with 2 partitions, one for Mac, and one for Windows.

If I plug in an external drive it recognises that. I can also boot into the 2 partitions mentioned above, but they do not show up in Disk Utility in the Leopard installer. It recognises the disk but not the partitions.

In the leopard disk utility installer it sees no partitions (but can see the disk), and partitioning fails saying "Resource busy".

Anyone got any ideas?

Yes, identical problems here with my main drive on a PowerMac G5. Leopard recognises the disk but not the (only) partition, and can't repair or verify it, and can't see it as a valid installable volume.

I have tried installing/repairing from my laptop, connecting it to the PowerMac in target disk mode. If I boot from my Tiger (10.4) disc it works and declares the disc okay, but the Leopard disagrees and can't see it still.

Is there any way to make Leopard "see" the volume?

Update: I've now used my Tiger install disk to do a verify and repair on the disk, but it still hasn't helped.

So when BootCamp (1.1-1.4) set aside a 2nd partition from some unfragmented free space for Windows, that prevents Leopard from installing?

Seems like for now, move Tiger to the USB and use Winclone to move Windows and be forced to reformat.

I had the same problem. Opened disk utility and it could see the HD, but not any details of the volume. Rebooted, still didn't show up. Opened disk utility again and same thing, no details. A few seconds later the full volume information suddenly appeared. Went back to the installer and it worked just fine.

Keep trying.....maybe let it sit there a bit longer.

I had the same problem on my MBP 2.2.
Fixed it (not sure if this is a once off though!?)

This is all I did:
1. Boot with the Leopard disk.
2. Go through install until it can't find your hard disk.
3. Open Disk utility
4. Run a "repair disk" on your disk.
Mine found no errors on the disk, but once I closed Leopard's disk utility, I could see it in the installer.
5. Then install onto your regular internal disk.

I gave in and repartitioned using the Tiger Installer Disk Utility (after backing up of course).

Once I'd done that it all worked fine with the leopard install (well, to this point... it's just verifying the DVD at the moment).

Whilst typing my post, above, 10.5's disk utility finally had an epiphany and found the 10.4.10 volume. So it might be a matter of waiting up to 10 mins, rather than just a few seconds...
It's happily installing on the PowerMac now.

Having the same problem with a Core Duo MacBook...the Leopard installer sees the drive but not the partition. I don't want to have to erase the disk and do a clean install...

Yes, my MBP did the same thing. I waited a minute or two for the installer to find my HD, but nothing. I then had to take my kids to school so I just walked away. Upon returning 10 min later, my HD was there and I could begin to install. I have no idea why it would take so long, but it looks like you may just need to be patient.

well I'm cloning my HD into external drive to prevent disk failure...


just wonder why Apple ships Leopard with this bug. Didn't they test before they ship it?
